I posted information some time ago about a 1905 Barre, Vermont City
Directory that is posted on the internet. I just found that along with
this is an 1883-84 City/Business Directory. There are many Scots names in
there - they came to Barre, mostly from Aberdeen and the surrounding area
to work in the granite industry. I thought some of the people new to the
list might like to look through them. For those of you who have seen the
1905 Directory, please take a look at the very early Scots who immigr

Hi Irene,
Barehillock is just out of Tarland. There are two ways to get there, travel the Logie Coldstone road for about 2 miles, turn off towards Migvie for about a mile, take the first bitumen road heading back to Tarland. Barehillock is only a short distance from the
Hi folks,
I have decided i am too enamoured with the Highlands and might fall to the
sin of 'Tartanism' and getting nowhere with my last posting will turn to the
mysterious side of my family - my mother's. Those of you who are interested in
finding ancestors within the City of Aberdeen might find common interest.
My mother's maiden name was Elsie Kirk, her mother's name was Elsie Ann

grandmother moved to a prefab in Hayto

Hi, Listers,
I had the same dilemma. I have JAMES WALKER HAY and I could not figure out
where that middle name came from! After reading about the "history" of the
times and of the church in that time frame (1835) I think I now have an answer.
The family, on naming their sixth child, and supporting their parish vicar,
decided to name their son after him (1835). Sounds good anyway, for 1835 in
Huntly. I know its not the mothers maiden name, hers was GILBERT.

There was such a convention, but it is important to realise that not
every family used it, and even families that did, didn't necessarily
follow it to the letter. So while the naming convention can give you
useful clues as to where to look for missing ancestors, it doesn't prove
that you've found them.

Hi Pete
Does your family of Davidson join up with the Davidsons in Aberdeen.
Alexandrina [alexina] Milne daughter of Alexander Milne and May Dow married
John Davidson in 1884 St Nicholas Aberdeen. His parents were listed on the
marriage certificate as John Davidson and Mary Knowles. According to the
marriage certificate Johnjunior was born ca 1852, but I have found a John
born to the above parents 18th Oct 1849, so perhaps he didn't want to appear
too old on his marriage certificate.
Does this information

My gggrandfather James DAVIDSON was born in Scotland ca. 1812, possibly in Aberdeenshire. From James's marriage certificate, I know his father's name was George DAVIDSON, a blacksmith, but I don't have his mother's name.
It's possible that the family moved to Greenock when James was small or before he was born. There's a family story that George or James ended up as an engineer on the steam ferries to Ireland. James moved south to Bristol by 1841 & on to Swindon (Wiltshire) in the

Hi,
I've been off the listg for some considerable time, but have made a slight
breakthrough in my search.
Has anyone come across John McGREGOR in Longside. He married Margaret BARRY.
IGI shows a marriage to people of this name in Old Machar Aberdeen in 1829,
so possibly they were not originally from Longside.
Thanks

The cup-and-pulley system in Department Stores worked by a catapult. We used to have one in our local co-op in Surrey and we
actually saw an original installation still in situ in a store in Kilmare, Co Kerry, in June - not working alas. So Ireland haven't
got rid of all their heritage!
The counter assistant sent the wheeled cup on its way by pulling an escape mechanism which tensed an elastic belt [not unlike the
band used to tie things to panniers & roof-racks]. The force sent the cup up the wir

Hello,
How is this Elspeth Johnston born 1839 in Newhills connected to Margaret
Johnston b. 1575 in Aberdeen? Margaret Johnston was married to Thomas Burnett 08
Nov 1608 Aberdeen, Scotland.
Their son John Burnett was christened 25 Dec 1610 St Nicholas Parish,
Aberdeen, Scotland married ca 1567 Old Rapahannock Co., VA to Lucretia Johnston
christened 22 Mar 1629 St Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen Scotland. (daughter of Andrew
Johnston and Janet Matheson)
I am trying to trace the son of one of my distant aunt, Janet Paton had a son John out of wedlock (I think it is actually listed as illegitemately) to Thomas Smith 30/11/1848. I am interested in what happened to him and his father and any other family they may have.
