Hi Janet,
Most of them were lured by the promise of higher wages and better
living in the New World.
There is a booklet called Barre in Retrospect II - 1776 - 1995
published by the Friends of the Aldrich Public Library, Barre,
Vermont which gives the history of Barre and the various
immigrants who worked in the granite industry.
If I remember correctly, I also found some information in the
Special Collections and Archives at Kings College, Aberdeen,
pertaining to the granite industry

Hi All,
I wonder whether anyone living in the Aberdeen area might be able to
help with the following.
My maternal 2xg grandmother, Elspit LAUDER, nee Milner or Milnar
was born in Tough, Aberdeen, about 1818. She married George LAUDER at
St Nicholas, Aberdeen on 15 September, 1842.
It now seems possible that she had an older brother, Ebenezer.
Can anyone oblige with a check of the appropriate records?
Thanks in anticipation

Dear Alex,
I have an extract of an OPR in Aberdeen, Aberdeen of the marriage of John Brands
and Margaret Main.
I ordered it by mistake thinking it was the John Brands that I am researching.
It reads:
" After due proclamation of banns, John Brands, Pilot in Aberdeen, was, on the
Fifteenth day of June, One thousand eight hundred and thirty-nine, Married at
Aberdeen to Margaret, daughter of the late George Main, pilot in Aberdeen, by the
Reverend Alexander Spence, Minister of St. Clement's Parish Aberdeen:;
Hi Jim
Thank You for M.I. info.
I have been told that it is likely that the Parish Registers for Echt would
not have burial entries.I am interested to find the other burial dates. Is
this a standard problem with
Scottish Parish Registers and do you know if this is the case for Echt?
I would appreciate any local knowledge on Echt.
I detail below the IGI info extracted on the Coopers of Echt.

Gave the information to subscribe to a friend who wanted to join the
list and said not to put anything in the subject and only the word
subscribe on the body of the message, but she keeps being told by
Compuserve that she must put something in the subject line. She tried
putting in subscribe there but still it came back from Compuserve.
Since I can't find my sheet from when I subscribed could someone
straighten me out, how does one subscribe to the list.

Hi there fellow ABD researchers,
I have a problem, I first find my family in TORPHINS in the
Kincardine O'Neil area of ABD. I have a Robert MILNE and an Ann
SCHAW or SHAW (shown by both names on different records).
I find the births of Abraham Milne in 1762 and Robert Milne 1764
being born to this couple.
Can find absolutely NOTHING on any family of either parents (a
few possibilities for Robert) and no reference to a marriage or
previous children. I have been working on this for years but am

Hi Marge,
The OPR is all there was prior to Civil Registration in 1855.
You cannot get an actual marriage certificate unless it is 1855 or after.
That is why it doesn't pay to send for one from Scots Origins.
You can copy the same one at the FHC for 25 cents+ whatever it costs you to
order the roll of film from Salt Lake. $3.50?
I know it is disappointing because you can get so much information from
a certificate.
Sorry, Dorothy Nicassio

I have 2 questions to pose for the group. My family was born either in the
St. Nicholas or the Old Machar areas in Aberdeen. Can anyone tell me what
church(es) served the area? Is there a book of monumental inscriptions
available for whatever church(es) they might have intended? Many of the
family appear in the OPR (from 1720 on), so I am assuming they were
associated with the Church of Scotland, although I am not sure about what
happened with them after the schism.
The other question is this. I know

Hi Listers,
I wonder if someone in the know could help me with a problem I have. On his
attestation & discharge papers for the Army my 3 X Great Grandfather gives
his place of birth as Raffhaven, Banff. This place does not seem to exist and
the nearest anyone can find is Rathven. Was this the old name for Raffhaven
or, perhaps, a parish in Banff itself?
TIA

In 1841 Census of Linlithgow, Susanna Duff, 15 gives her occupation as

Australia, is engaged in the papermaking trade. Can anyone suggest ( no
