1. Solid information [1]
Does anyone know exactly what the deal is on returning to Jefferson Parish? Jeff. Emergency Management website says one thing and Aaron Broussard is quoted as saying something else. Which is correct? Can we only return today (Monday), Tuesday and Wednesday? Or can we return to get our things after Wednesday? Help us with valid information. We're in Dallas and San Diego. Need to make plans. Thanks and God bless us all. Sandy
2. Thoughts On Katrina [1]
Our vulnerability! Wow! If ever it has been shown just how really vulnerable we all are this episode (Katrina) has been the best example. This countyr has had a real wake-up call, and I hope that now the bureaucrats and talking heads of both parties will quit their collective partisan foolishness, and get on with the business of estaablishing guidlines for worst case scenarios such as we have been witnessing this past week. If we are going to use our National Guard for overseas use, then we need

4. From St. Martinville [1]
I wrote to Brenda to ask if she and her family was okay - Brenda is the Director at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville - << We at the Acadian Memorial would like to let you know that our organization was safely out of harm's way from the hurricane, unlike so many other organizations in other areas of Louisiana that suffered such tremendous loss. The people from the Acadiana parishes which are near here around St. Martin, Lafayette were spared the wrath of the most horrific storm we have ever seen
5. RE: [ACADIAN-CAJUN] How is Breaux Bridge? [1]
Breaux Bridge suffered wind damage but no serious flooding. The Calvary Cemetery on the Breaux Bridge Highway suffered some damge and one of the gravestones was uprooted - see excerpt below Stanley LeBlanc http://www.thecajuns.com ***excerpt from item in The Daily Advertiser*** A pine tree downed by Hurricane Rita in Calvary Cemetery on the Breaux Bridge Highways uprooted one of the gravestones there. The pines roots pulled up a cement grave with a tombstone marked: My Mother, Mrs. Louis Pershing Fl

7. New Orleans, MS and AL Gulf Coast Landmarks [1]
There is an article in today's Dallas Morning News [unfortunately, it isn't on the online version] of the New Orleans, MS and AL Gulf Coast landmarks. I scanned and converted to pdf and put a link on my Katrina info page at http://www.thecajuns.com/katrina.htm Ironically, the French Quarter wasn't as damaged as feared. 8. Re: Texans are good neighboors - We do Understand! [1]
Hi All, We in Texas understand what the Louisiana residents are going through right now because we lived it. We didn't have as many deaths but our flooding and devastation was almost the same. I know because I lived through it with an 11 month old baby and my husband called out to Galveston in the National Guard. I took shelter in a big tin warehouse behind my grandmotherb

10. Re: St. Louis Cathedral [1]
Miracles do happen! Proof is, that magnificent cathedral is still standing. I have seen many more miracles while watching the recovery of all the victims that did survive. I have to see the good now as I can't take much more of the bad. They have a long road ahead of them with the clean up but I believe it will get done! Thank you DJ for the information! 11. Re: [ACADIAN-CAJUN] Thoughts On The "Slow Response" [1]
I must comment on the frustration of help being so slow. On Saturday before the storm, New Orleans and surrounding parishes were ordered to evacuate. Most did! My son did and lives in my driveway now. His home is destroyed and everything he had lost, but he left on Sunday and came here. Every time a hurricane is headed in this direction, and people are ordered to evacuate, there are always those who rather stay and party. The night before the storm, Fox news was talking to people on Bourban st
12. The Massachusetts Attitude [1]
The people coming to Massachusetts will be treated as guests which means they will be treated the best as we would treat guests into our home. They will not be called refugees or evacuees according to Governor Romney. Volunteers are asked to sign up to help not only with serving food, etc. but also to care for the pets that will be coming along with their owners if they are needed to bathe them, walk them, etc.. I am proud of my state of Massachusetts for the manner in which it is putting out t

Hi Linda, << We all need to join together and just help and pray. After all is said and done ....then lets hold people accountable. For now I ask that we all stick together for the sake of these poor, displaced, broken families.>> << Lets not get into the political aspects of this. That will only bring dissention among us. >> Amen! What you've said here expresses my sentiments exactly. It is a time to pull together in whatever way we can no matter where we live. 15. Thoughts On The "Slow Response" [1]
Give me a break. Why couldn't 4 days ago what is going on today could not have been in place? All the sound reasons you have stated are true but why is today the magic day? We are showing our venerability to the world, with the way our country has been running helter skelter, TRYING to solve this horrible disaster! 17. Good News re documents in the Acadian Museum in Erarth [1]
Below is an excerpt of an email I received 9/27/2005 from Warren A. Perrin that was dated 9/26/2005 I've asked Mr. Perrin for some photos to put on my site and I'll have a page up asap. ***excerpt from email*** Yesterday [Note: 9/25], with the help of the US Marines and the Erath Fire Dept., and Chief of Police (and some good Samaritans), we "rescued" the Queen's Royal Proclamation (along with a truck load of artifacts and priceless materials and maps) from the Ac. Mus. of Erath which was flooded. Mary
18. Cingular Cell Phone Failure [1]
There will be a need to review the failure of the Cingular cell network. My family in Baton Rouge cannot call out and I can't call in to the 225 area code. Baton Rouge wasn't impacted too heavily by the hurricane so the 225 network shouldn't be impacted. There should also be a backup for the 504 numbers. In effect, Cingular phones with 225 and 504 are nearly totally useless. Stanley LeBlanc http://www.thecajuns.com
19. Some good news from New Orleans [1]
<< New Orleans Public Library is delighted to be able to announce that the New Orleans City Archives, which we hold, is relatively safe. Although the majority of our records (as well as the 19th and early 20th century records of the Orleans Parish civil and criminal courts) are housed in the basement of the Main Library, some 18 feet below sea level, the basement remained essentially dry. 21. RE: [ACADIAN-CAJUN] Emergency food stamps [1]
Rita Glad to know you are ok. Please remember when you get that hankering for crawfish you don't get them at a food store you get them at a BAIT SHOP and they won't take your food stamps. You will have to mix your own crabboil, Try to save a few to take back to the person who sold them to you. If he/she won't eat them watch their face as you eat them. 23. Re: [ACADIAN-CAJUN] Hurricanes in Louisiana History [1]
Stanley et al, I'm particularly interested in the hurricane that displaced the Cajun community at Bayou des Ecores (Thompson's Creek) as quite a few of my ancestors were forced to relocate. Nearly all of the information I've found online suggests that most of the people relocated to Lafourche. However, none of mine did. They all went to West Baton Rouge. I just wonder if any stories of this storm and the inhabitants exist beyond what is easily Googled. Thanks, Martha August 31-September 1, 1794
