(holy ghost fathers) in Gambia his residence was in the capital
Banjou(formerly Bathurst) and he went up the Gambia river also to do
missionary work at Mcarthy mission station
He was in the Gambia from 1926 to 36 came back to UK and then enlisted in the
army as a chaplain coming back to Gambia 1942-46.When he was demobbed he was

I noticed that there hadn't been much traffic on this list, and assumed
there were few active members.
I may follow up your suggestion, simply out of curiosity about what happened
to John Mantell's wife. Also, since they married in 1838 and there was only
one child that I can find, born about 1850, it seemed unlikely that there
were no other children in those twelve years.
Since posting that query, I have managed to find more about him from a
published list of Barr
If anyone has access to any Colonial records about the Gambia, can they
enlighten me about the work and family of John Iles MANTELL?
It looks as if he and his wife Susan had at least one child in the Gambia, a
daughter named Laura about 1850. It is also possible that his wife died
there and is buried there.
As far as I know, Mantell Street in Banjul is namedafter him.
Any help would be much appreciated.
