Dear Sierra Leone researchers,
Over a year ago I mentioned that I had a friend in Freetown (based at the
YMCA) who is willing to do research for people, and send information back
online for an agreed fee (which would need to be sent by money transfer).
I have since returned to Freetown and re-connected with him - Mohammed, and
wanted to pass on his contact details should anyone need his services.
Email: mohbiankeh@yahoo.co.uk or mobile: +232 (0) 33 886 554
Hope this is of use. Good luck with your re
We have an ancestor Henry Edwards who is recorded in the 1871 census as Hy W Edwards being at sea on the HMS Barrosa and his birth details are shown as being born "At sea off Sierra Leone" in 1851. In the 1881 census he is shown as being in Greenwich, England and as being a British subject born in Sierra Leone.
Can anyone help locate his birth details or tell where such records may be located

I have joined a few mailing lists for the continent of Africa this past week
and have learned much about the geography there. I have learned that my
interest is with the country of Sierra Leone, especially the towns of
Freetown and Fernand Po and not the Boer War which happened in the country
of South Africa.
I received an interesting email from a helpful gentleman today. Something he
pointed out was that, "In your case, I think the clue lies in the
letterhead. Your great-grandfather was a "Furrier". His
I have been trying to look into the Boer War of 1899-1902 and am wondering
if there are any records pertaining to the British citizens or those
representing Britain somewhere. As I posted in another query recently about
Census of British citizens, I was trying to track my great-grandfather,
Harry Gustav Erber (aka Heinrich Johannes Christoph Gustav Erber--a born
German but with Swiss citizenship). From the family we know that he was
very fluent in 8 different languages--speaking 8 and reading/writing 5.
Thanks for your messages,
I will do my best to seek out any information I can find on the people
you're researching, but can't promise anything. I'm going over there on
tour with a show and we only have one free day in Freetown so I'll be
heading to Fourah Bay College to see what I can dig up!
I'll let you know if anything comes up.
Best, Zoe
Hi,
I am new to this mailing list and wondered if anybody was able to help me.
I am looking for my Gt Gt Grandfather William James JOHNSON ( or James William).
I believe he married my Gt GT Grandmother Sarah Ann HAWKINS in 1882 on the Isle of Sheppey. He was a Naval Pensioner living in Gillingham, Kent in 1901 with his family - Mabel, William, Alice, Edith, Nellie and Charles. He may have been born around the 1850's in Sierra Leone according to the 1901 Census.
If anyone has even the slightest piece
I am interested in finding out where the above relative of mine is buried. He died in 1837 at Sierra Leone and was possibly in charge of a ship at the time. That is all the information I have. Any assistance would be gratefully received.

Hi Zoe
I have been trying to research family in Sierra Leone for some time but have
had no real response. I am forwarding two e mails which I did receive
earlier but when I tried to contact them got no reply. I think the
situation in the country at present may have something to do with it. Was
your aunt a missionary or just working or living over there? You will see
my enquiries were based on family stories of someone who went there as a
missionary possibly from Wales.
Best of luck.
Regards
Diana
Hello,
I am searching for relatives of mine who are Sierra-Leonian and were living
in Freetown in 1987, in particular I am looking for my aunt Annie Maude
Lewis.
I have written to the national archivist but have received no response, does
anyone have any suggestions as to how I can go about trying to locate family
members in the country? I am due to travel over there in November so would
ideally like to make some connections before I leave.
Thanks so much,
Zoe
Just repeating my earlier plea in case anyone has any information to help with the query below.
I am very new to this list and not exactly sure how it works.
I am researching ancestors who came to Sierra Leone from England in the early 19th century as missionaries. The surname is MURRUS/MURRIS/MERCESS and apparently the person, whose christian name I do not know at this stage, brought his wife and family with him. His wife died and he then remarried a local girl. One of the children of this second ma
Dear List Members,
This my first posting on this List. I am looking for information
about the graves (and any memorial inscriptions) of Church Missionary
Society (CMS) school teachers James BUNYER and his wife Mary (nee

1823.
James and Mary BUNYER departed England on 8th November 1822 aboard the

appointed to schools in Freetown. Both, however, succumbed to yellow

My 3xg.grandfather,Ceasar Fitzgerald, born 1811-15 was according to family
tales, the son of a freed slave . On his marriage certificate he states that
his father was a " native of West Africa".
Caesar states on the ships details that he sailed on that he himself was
born in Sierra Leone. He was a ship's Steward.
I have records for him from 1843 until 1854. His death in our family bible
was entered as 1864.
My question is , are there any records of freed slaves ?If there are would

Hi Zoe
Your posting has been the most positive one, I have seen regarding research
in Freetown. I have been trying since the 1970's without so much as a
reply.
I would certainly be interested in commisioning someone to do research on my
behalf, if you could pass on the details to me.
My Great Grandfather Robert Gustave Walker was Christened in Freetown on
the 23rd January 1857 his mother Judith Catherine Jarrett died there on the
12th May 1886. I am sure me and many others would love to hear more
Hello,
I returned from my trip to Sierra Leone a month ago now and it has taken me
a while to re-adjust!
Thank you all for your messages before I left, I took all your details with
me but, in the event I was only left with a few hours in which to visit
archives and carry out research.
What little I did find out was this; it is almost impossible to carry out
research on Sierra Leone without being there or having someone who is
working over there on your behalf. This is due to the state of the
archives, ma
Hi Everyone
I have been away from this list for a while and have just noted Zoe's trip.
I am very jealous! as I have been longing to go out to Sierra Leone for
years. I too, would be interested to see how much your friend would charge
for research, although by the sound of it he is going to be inundated with
requests.
My ancestor was called William Johnson (or sometimes James William
Johnson). He joined the Royal Navy in 1873 as a Seedie (I know they came
from the Eastern side of Africa) but Will
