1. RE: [APG] Interesting proj. - need ideas [1]
Hello, Rebecca, Have you been in touch with Jane Nylander, recently retired, from SPNEA? Or Edward Maeder of Historic Deerfield? Historic Deerfield has always been very strong on scholarship, and has similar pieces in its collections. Keep us posted on your hunt, Lynda > [Original Message] > From: Rebecca Rector > To: > Date: 6/4/03 10:28:15 AM > Subject: [APG] Interesting proj. - need ideas > > Hi all - > I have been working on an interesting project tha

Iredell wasn't formed until 1788, according to the reference I have (Redbook).
3. Re: [APG] BLM Information [1]
Remeber that the Hoomestead Act was not until 1862. Federal land transactions before that are not homesteads. When requesting the files at the Archives, you do need to identify whether it is a Cash entry, Homestead (HD in the tract book) or whatever and give the Final Certificate number. Someone mentioned (sorry, it's been a few days) that the case files for cash entries are pretty slim pickings, which is true. HOWEVER!! - they usually have a receipt signed by the entryman. For a client, this p

Good Afternoon Folks, I tried to make the drive all the way to Florida in one day but pooped out about 9 pm. and stopped in Tallahassee, FL. The rain in Southern Alabama was terrible and cut into my driving time. Yes, the program was great and the information was very well worth the time and effort. Enjoyed renewing acquaintances and meeting new folks. Like Dave said...if you think about it...don't, just do it. And keep looking for those neighbors. Alvie L. 5. [APG] NGS Pittsburgh Syllabus [1]
I understand that people are still looking for the NGS Pittsburgh syllabus, especially those who could not attend. If you were thinking of not keeping yours, let me know and I will try to re-home it. But the thought occurs to me that this list contains probably the most likely candidates to keep their syllabus... and well you should! I have had to add another bookcase to my office for just such reference material. Best wishes, Elissa Powell, CGRS CGRS is a service mark of the Board for Certification of Ge
6. [APG] The public land grab- another perspective [1]
After reading the discussion of Homestead vs preemption vs commutation I wanted to recommend a wonderful, although very cynical, social history of the American public lands programs. The lure of the land; a social history of the public lands from the Articles of Confederation to the New Deal Everett N. 7. Re: [APG] Ancestry.com?? [1]
But Pam, Yesterday I could put a common name in and come up with no hits. In my part of the country (McMinn County Tennessee) there are lots of Wattenbargers but the system said 0 hits. And the worst part was last week I did the same lookup amd got twenty pages. The search thing is acting strange. It didn't work with soundex or always starting at the home page. I was trying to do a search for a friend and since this person is so disappointed I wonder if she'll keep trying to find her family. Sh

13. [APG] FHL is cutting hours 1 July 2003 [1]
I learned today that the Family History Library is cutting its hours. Currently, the library is open on Mondays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday-Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Starting in July, the new hours on Monday will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday-Saturday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Those of you who like to wait in line for the library to open will now get a little extra sleep, and you can go to bed earlier at night. I haven't heard whether there will be any adjustments to the hours of the FamilySe
14. Re: [APG] "My loving wife" phrase in 17th century will [1]
Whether or not she was "loving" wife, or he a "loving" husband is probably another story... However, my interpretation of this is that whatever bequest is being made to the "now wife" is to go to HER heirs if she should die and the husband should remarry without making another will. If the will simply said "wife," the wife at the time of his decease could have laid claim to the bequest. Shoot. Now you have me confused. I'm going to have to stop and think every time to try to remember the difference between "got" and "get" from your perspective. I think I have a way to do that - look at the penultimate letter in "grantor" and "grantee."! If that letter is "e" then it means . . . Oh, the heck with it. 16. [APG] CORRECTION, Homestead [1]
Hi All...a correction in my posting on the CANCELED homesteads - it was the POST 30 June 1908 canceled homestead applications that are found in scattered locations (not the pre 1908). It's been an interesting discussion regarding BLM both on and off the forum - these homesteads are wonderful records with some excellent genealogical information. 18. [APG] Re: APG-D Digest V03 #201 [1]
As a writer, I prefer WordPerfect -- and MANY of my colleagues feel the same way. It gives the flexibility that writers need: the "reveal codes" option permits the user to see what typographic codes have been imbedded into the copy, intentionally or not, so that when something crazy happens in the copy, the writer can "take a look," put the cursor on the problem-causing code, and delete it. It also has a "case conversion" option so that one can switch from upper to lower or mixed case type face. A
19. RE: [APG] Scanner [1]
Ann, Last Christmas I purchased an all-in-one HP D145 scanner/printer/fax/copier to save space in my office. I have been very pleased with it on all counts. The quality of scan is very good. Prior to this I had a UMAX 1200S scanner which also gave me good results, but it went kaput with the advent of Win XP, for no reason other than UMAX didn't update the driver for it. There's only one drawback that I have run into with the HP - it is a USB connection, but it has to run directly off the PC - it can't run
20. [APG] Ancestry.com?? [1]
Is anyone trying to search 1920 & 1930 censuses on Ancestry this AM? When I logged on I was able to look at the first set of the surnames but when I tried to look at the rest I got the message to refine my search. Since I had only put in a surname I tried given names. Same result. Entered a different surname (one I know there are dozens of people by that name--my husband's line) in both years and got the message there were "no records to view matches." Wonder what's going on with them. I sure don't li

Hi Rebecca, Interesting project indeed! Sounds like you've covered the best bases, so here are a couple of "off-the-beaten-path" suggestions. I've had some success, in similar projects, by checking with auction galleries. If the ability of the maker of the work you're researching was as good as the maker of the work hanging in the Winterthur (I'm leaping to an assumption of quality here), then it's possible that a piece by the same person came up for auction at some point. Most auction houses keep excell

Dear member: I edit (read: write most of) my computer interest group newsletter (Colorado Genealogical Society). Would you guys submit to me, for inclusion into my newsletter, some Keyboard Casualties stories? The title of my article will be: "I Killed My Laptop With a Dr. Pepper". Stories of food incidents, spilt milk, cat walking across your keyboard, or similar accidents. I'd like to attach your name to the anecdote; if you wish for you name to NOT be included, please do not sign the email.
