Hi:
I was browsing the Univ. of AR library online webpage and came across
these papers that I am pasting below.
Any of us who are researching early Crawford Co. will know of her history
but these are her actual research papers and correspondence. One still has
to go to the library to view them.
Regards
Nan

FOUND CONFEDERATE DEPOSIT SLIPS
A few days ago S A Hinkle in looking over a lot of old papers left by his uncle, John Hinkle, deceased, found a number of deposit slips that looked good to him for they read as follows:
Washington, Ark., 12-24-1864
This certifies that John Hinkle has deposited in this office nine hundred and ninety nine dollars of "old issue" treasury notes to be exchanged on his order for two-thirds of that sum in "new issue"

OLDEST MAN IN ARKANSAS
Grandfather Jake Crabtree, colored, of Lavaca, is in the city on his annual visit to his son-in-law, Jerry Norwood. He bears the distinction of being the oldest man in Western Arkansas or the Indian Territory and is now in his 106th year. His hair is as white as the cotton he has worked in for practically a century, yet he is active, has good eyesight, and with the exception of being slightly deaf does not appear to be more than 75 years old.
He is a

MANY CHEROKEES WERE IN CITY YESTERDAY
From Sundays Daily
Visitors to Van Buren were surprised yesterday morning to see small groups of Indians on the streets and about the court house lawn, quite a number of them being well known to our merchants as they have in the past bought their supplies here as well as sold their cotton on our markets.
There were fully fifty of them, men, women and children, a few of them being full-blooded. The most

It is so hard to imagine living almost one hundred years ago and learning of disater of this magnitude after almost a week has passed. Cable news has sure replaced an outdated mode of communication but the Associated Press is still a familiar name to us.

About 1 oclock Sunday afternoon Mr. Dick Hennessey, living on Lees Creek, reached Van Buren in search of Sheriff Moore, to whom he reported the finding of a dead body of a man in a tent about a quarter of a mile below the Water Companys pump station on Lees Creek.
Justice J H Miller summoned a jury of 12 men, and loading them in covered vehicles drove out there, accompanied by Hunt & Ayers Undertaking wagon. Arriving at the tent they proceeded
