Thanks Nellie, for the URL.
It's a super place to do research. I was there this spring. Wished I coud have stayed longer. I discovered one thing about it though. All these years I had been told that
the archives had all the early records from the county. Not true! I had to go to the county courthouse to get a marriage record, dated 1795. So check before you go all the
way to Richmond for something, that may be at the court house level.

Correction: Thomas d. 1n 1752 & was m to Rose Berry, whose marriage
record is at the LDS site.
This begins with Thomas Ashby of VA who died around 1779, I think. He
was
the father of Capt John Ashby who served under Washington and was
married
to the rather notorious Jean Combs (Gen Washington wrote a letter to her
husband telling him he had better curb his wife.) Other children are

Something else folks may not know about the SS index.. If you cannot find your people on the Soc. Sec. death index. They may not have been on Soc. Sec. because they were
farmers, teachers, railroad workers, military etc., especially before the 1950's when those occupations did not pay into the Social Security fund. Some of these occupations
had their own pensions and were not eligible. NOT farmers, though and that is one of the reasons for social security being started.
My ASHBY connection comes in with the marriage of Mary Ashby on 22 September 1742
to Richard Forgham in Myddle Shropshire England.
Is anyone researching over in England?

Researching the ASHBYs of Fauquier County, Va.
I'm new to this list, about 3 weeks now, but there doesn't seem to be
much activity. I received a first post from the list today. I wonder
how many are signed up or who is researching what ASHBY. Can we get
some activity going here?
Who are you researching?
Thanks a lot.

Hi Nick,
Thanks for posting. Sorry to be so long in getting back to you.
It's interesting, in as most of the Ashby's I've researched, in England, come from Hertfordshire or Leicestershire. I think most of the Ashby's on this list, come from a
Thomas Ashby, who was in VA. in late 1600's and died in 1752, there. Many thought he was the same Thomas who came to SC and was married to a Thorowgood He named his
plantation in SC "Quenby" and it was supposed to be in memory of his ancestral home in S. Croxton, Leic
I am searching for the ancestors of my great grandfather, Emmett ASHBY
WHITLOCK. He was born 20 Sept. 1867, probably in or around Augusta County,
VA. I have never known where the name ASHBY came from, but have a feeling
that his mother may have been an ASHBY. Does anyone know of an ASHBY who may
have married a Whitlock some time about c. 1860??
Thanks.
Connie
Thank you to everyone who has sent material.
I'm a little confused. I received a response that said that Nimrod Ashby's
"sons" were raised by their grandfather, Robert Ashby.
Nimrod and Frances are supposed to have a daughter, Mary Frances/Frances b c
1760 m bef 1784 to David Standiford, moved to KY.
Can anyone help me with the names & dates of Nimrod and Frances' children?
Thanks,
Sharon Bryant

I thought I had run the spell check on the last post, but, evidently, it dropped out.
The name of John Ashby Jr's wife is correctly spelled Constantia.
Also, of course is wasn't Dondon that John Sr. went back to but, London.
Please excuse the other errors in spelling. Sue
