Check that the first appearance has not died at an early age, this was not uncommon and there seems to be a desire to carry the name on, thus the next born will be named the same. Another alternative may be the second born had 2 firstnames and was better known by the second firstname. I am very new to researching in Australia. I am looking for any information on Amelia MAUGUAN nee Fargas / Furgas / Fergus (I am sure you get the idea). She arrived in Newcastle in 1880 with husband James and two children. That's the last I heard from her. Her husband has a child with Jane Ann Hutchison in 1885 in Newcastle and marries the woman in Sydney in 1894 but he states on his marriage certificate that he is currently living in Newcastle. Currently reading an interesting book first printed in 1975. Diaries of a Welsh Swagman 1869-1894. It is extracted from diaries kept by an Welshman Joseph Jenkins and is interesting reading in that it gives an insight into early life of a labourer in colonial Australia. The author being a Welsh farmer gives many thoughts re the farming techniques of the time. Mostly set around Ballarat in Vic but a lot would be relevant for the rest of Australia.
