I am interested in two NIXON brothers, Samuel and Thomas, who were
transported to NSW in 1818 and 1819 respectively. Samuel had four children
by a woman who is variously known as Elizabeth Johnson or Frances Foley:
I'm pretty sure they are one and the same person as she is called Elizabeth
Nixon or Johnson on the 1828 census, but the children of the household were
christened with their mother's name being given as Frances Foley. I suspect
Elizabeth Johnson may be an alias and that's what the authorities c
Dear Jill,
In teh early 1830s, to encourage workers to come to Australia, the
Government started a bounty scheme. As I understand it the bounty (about 40
pounds from memory) was paid to any employer who brought someone out and
gave them a job and accomodation. I think it was mainly the big employers
like (James) MacArthur, Berry, Jamison, Wentworth, etc who pushed it through
the Legislative Council and then exploited it to their advantage. They liked
it because they
became "Lords of the Manors", retaining c

I went to the State Library yesterday and ascertained that my Michael Costelloe was the one who immigrated in 1856 on the "Morayshire".
He was also born in Sixmilebridge, County Clare in 1828 (as was his brother James in 1835)
His wife was Annie Redding, daughter of James and Anne Redding.
Son John was born Paddington London in 1852
Daughter Mary A born Ennis, County Clare in 1855, she died in Sydney in 1856
Son James Christopher born in Sydney in 1857
Michael and Annie look like they died in Parkes NSW in
Most State Libraries hold the latest and past Electoral Rolls.
Also all Electoral Offices have the entire current Electoral Roll for
Australia. They are free to look at.

Hi Sandy
Not sure but I would say that a Cabbage Tree Hat would be a hat woven from
the fonds of a very common palm
(can't remember which one) very similar to many woven by indigenous people
on many Pacific Islands, and the top end of Australia. In my younger days I
actually bought a Cabbage Tree hat. It is a little like a "Pith Helmet" worn
by early explorers but with a shallow crown

Hello Listers,
My name is Leona, I live in Toowoomba, Qld, and am retired. I have been researching ALL Flood folks descending from Joseph FLOOD, Ann Jarmy/Germaine, (and Ann Gorman), since 1986. Beginning with my Paternal Grandmother, Annie FLOOD who was GG-daughter of Joseph FLOOD and Ann Germaine.
Joseph and Ann had son John, and Joseph had 4 other sons, of whom I've also been researching. Plus their descendants.
Is there anyone else on this mailing list who is researching these family/s? peaches@en

Not sure if this one is connected or not, but I have a John Skelton who
married a Margaret Seckold in 1871 (scone). Their son Frederick John born
1873 married Elizabeth Tailby (my connection) in 1897 at Gunnedah.
I am not sure of who John's parents were.

Hi,
I have just joined this list. Although I am researching a New Zealand
family, one of them emigrated to Australia, possibly NSW enroute to
Queensland. The name is Charles TURNER, born 1870 in New Zealand, son of
Charles TURNER and wife Maria PALMER TURNER. Charles married a woman named
Bertha and had two children, Alma and Charles Alfred TURNER.
If this sounds familiar to anyone, I would like to hear from you.
Thanks you.
