How many of you have researched the wrong family/ies ? Come on fez up ! .............. I've only had one major blunder a few years ago when doing SILS family on a shoestring budget . 4. Re: [HV] Maitland area and gold [1]
There was gold mining in the Maitland area. We are in the process of indexing the Auriferous Leases (gold bearing lands) for NSW and we have come across some for the Maitland area. 5. Re: [HV] Area by the name of St Vincents [1]
Hello Peter and all Maybe it could be Mount Vincent, but it does say St Vincents. I have looked up the Lands Department's new website and they are processing old Parish Maps. There is a County of St Vincent, but the map has not been processed as yet. I checked Parish of St Vincents in 'Google' and came up with Parish of St Vincent's, Ashfield, but this was established 58 years after the marriage in 1836. I checked County of St Vincent in 'Google' and came up with the Jervis Bay area of New South
6. Surname interests around NSW [1]
I have the following surnames that 'started' in the New England area, particularly focused around Walcha and environs and in the late 1800s into the early 1900s. More recent generations are known to be on the coast and down into the Hunter Valley and as further south to Sydney and beyond. Hoping there are some connections on this list today. 7. Re: [HV] Maitland area [1]
Hello Robyn. Here are some thoughts in response to your questions. Many, many years ago, when I first started researching, I was using the Sands Directories. In one of them, either in the 1840s or 1850s (I don't know why 1852 comes to mind); somewhere near the front, there were some words about Maitland, and it said that it was THE LARGEST TOWN outside of Sydney -- at that time. Accordingly, it may be that your fellow moved there for that reason. But of course, one could then ask, "then why was it
8. RE: AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-D Digest V06 #131 [1]
Well, actually yes. There was gold discovered in Bishops Bridge at perhaps that time and one mine was sunk but it was never viable commercially. Interestingly it was discovered first as flecks in the crop of a goose that had been killed for dinner! There was, however a large sandstone quarry nearby, called Ravensfield. What was the occupation of your relative (as per the marriage certificate, perhaps)? Bishops Bridge had hotels, a wine shop, a school, a church, a blacksmith and a cemetery. Also in 1852

10. Blane St Newcastle [1]
Hi everyone A simple google search came up with the answer re Blane Street. That part of Hunter Street betw. Brown St. and Cottage Ck. after Mr. Blane - dep. govenor of A. A. Co. Honeysuckle Point - Name given to the area adjacent to Newcastle Harbour due to the fact that the native plant growing there looked like a Honeysuckle flower. Later removed to make way for the construction of Lee Wharf. This indicates the area around Civic which is where the Honeysuckle Goods Yards and Lee Wharves w

13. Wills [1]
Hi Last year I found a reference to a probate packet for my 2 x great grandfather Andrew MOORE. Armed with the appropriate reference number from the Probate Index, I visited State Records at Kingswood and was sadly told that the particular Probate Packet in question no longer existed. There was a Deceased Estate File which showed that he died owning a considerable amount of land in the Inverell area. Could someone tell me where I could look for a copy of the Will? Would I find it in the Will Books? Do I

19. Re: [HV] Wills [1]
Hello Dianne. Here are a couple of thoughts which might assist you. First: The Probate Division of the Supreme Court used to write out handwritten TRANSCRIPTS (with all of the mistakes which occur in this process) into large A3-sized books, of each Will which they held on file. When I started genealogy almost 40 years ago, anyone could access these at the Probate Office in Sydney. At a later stage they withdrew them from public availability. Now that the Probate Office has sent its older Probate pa

Hi Jan Could be St. Vincent and the Grenadines are located in the south Eastern Caribbean about 90 miles west of Barbados - the likely place that you would disembark then continue your flight to St. Vincent. The Grenadines are some 32 islands and cays stretching south from St. Vincent...... http://www.ualberta.ca/~amitchel/stvg.html Cheers Joanne ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jan Koperberg" To: Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2006 10:46 AM S

25. Re: [HV] Research black hole/s [1]
Hello Marg and List. Luckily we had not proceeded too far down the wrong track on one of our lines, before a maiden aunt pulled us up short. (This is not a Hunter Valley family; but the incident might be instructive nevertheless.) My wife is English and we were very carefully researching her father's mother, who is said to have been orphaned at a very young age. Her maiden name was Ellen Sophia HEATH. We went to London and stayed with a maiden aunt who was the eldest daughter in the family, who gav
