Hello listers
Daniel New, who married Alice Halloran in Sydney in 1844 is supposed to have died at Yulgilbar in about 1849 (nothing on the NSW BDM about this date however).
I am wondering about this place. Apparently it is a property on the Clarence River but is it also a township?
If Yulgilbar is only a property then that suggests that Daniel New and perhaps his wife were workers there in the 1840s. Can anyone advise me about either Yulgilbar or of any historical records of the place or its employees?
Thank you Deb that is a great site.I will have to go and talk to Allan
hopefully he will be able to put a christian name to Mr. Crabbe for me.

Thank you Margaret I would really appreciate
that I am trying to get as much information as I can. This all started for
me when I found that my 3ggrandfathers name was Faithful Crabbe, the name
facinated me. I am also interested now in finding out who was Crabbe's creek
named after in the Tweed district. If anyone has any knowledge of this or
they can tell me where to look for that information I would much appreciate
it. Thank you

Hi Jan,
A quick Google search found the following:
http://www.nswrail.net/library/station_names.php (NSW Railway Station Names
and Origins) says it was named after Mr Crabbe, an early settler.
At http://www.stayz.com.au/information?aid=13 it says

There is a book called 'Squatters Castle' by George Farwell which tells the story of Yubilbar.
Might be worth a read at least for back ground information.

There is also a book called Yulgilbah 1949 - 1999 by Janet Cannon which was
commissioned by Baillieu MYER as a celebration of 50 years of family
occupancy of Yulgilbah by the MYER family. It documents the history of the
property from when Edward Ogilvie first acquired the land to present day.
Published by Hardie Grant Books.

hi Greg,
Yulgilbar was an Ogilvie property.
Google 'Yulgilbar and you will probably learn enough.
The Clarence & Richmond Examiner was the first Grafton newspaper but not
started till 1859. Perhaps the Maitland Mercury carried some Clarence news.
The Historical Society at Grafton may have some more info.

Hi Jan
Re your message about Walter Crabbe at Grafton.
I was just having a look at the book The Bawden Lectures published by
the Clarence River Historical Society in 1973 (it has no index) and
found the following on page 84.
"Among some other old identities, men who perhaps have to some extent
dropped out of view of late years, I may mention some that occur to
me. The late Walter Crabbe of the First Falls, ........ I remember
those and their families arriving on the Clarence in Mr Girard's
Thank you Chris that has cleared that mystery up for me. My Crabbes come
from Somerset ,England and settled in the Clarence district in 1841.

Yulgilbar is no longer in the Ogilvie family. It was owned by the Hordens
and now the MYER family.
The 'castle' part (ie the top floor) has been demolished for years.

Thanks for your response listers. I will follow up your leads and try to find as much as I can about Daniel New or his family using this material.
Question: If Yulgilbar is a property and Daniel New died there in about 1849, does this suggest a private cemetery in existence then?
If so, does anyone have advice or information about private cemetery indexes which I might investigate for his name and death details?
Or has anyone seen such material in the Clarence River Historical Society?
Cheers
Greg
J.S. CONNORS died 20 March 1902 and is buried in Frederickton cemetery.
Catherine died 8 December 1939.
There are 20 CONNORS burials in our local cemeteries.

Hi,
You are looking for Clarke family, could you tell me where they emigrated

Hi Greg,
Yulgilbar was and still is a large grazing property near the head of the
Clarence River towards Tabulum. It was initially owned by the Olgivy
brothers and is still held by their descendants, one of whom was Sir
Lawrence Street. If you Google Yugilbar you will get quite a lot of
information on the station and the castle built as a homestead by the
Ogilvys. The Clarence River historical Society has quite a lot of
information on this property and I also believe there are some records
held by the UNE

Hi,
In 1848 William OGILVIE owned 'Yulgilbar' a property of 58,000 acres which
had an estimated grazing capacity of 800 cattle and 20,00 sheep. He also
owned an adjacent property 'Ogilvie's Cattle Station' a property of 15,300
acres and grazing capacity of 1200 cattle. In addition he had 'Fairfield'
16,00 acres and capacity for 400 cattle located on the main road from
Tabulam to Tenterfield.
By 1885 the property 'Yulgilbar' had increased to 216,800 acres with 350
horses, 11,500 cattle and 1000 sheep
