Hi Karen
According to Ross Wilson in his "Gray Family History' Robert GRAY is the son
of William (1800 - 1874) and Margaret (nee RAMSEY)(c1798 - 1852) and was
born 31 Dec, 1834, Fermanagh, Ireland. He migrated with his family 03 Sep,
1841 and married Jane ELLIOTT 18 Nov 1853 according to the rites of the
Presbyterian Church in Wollongong. They had 10 children including Anne
Lavinia who was born 18 Dec 1860, the birth being registered in Kiama.
Robert GRAY died 1884 near Wollongong, Jane died 21 Jul 1906,
I am looking for any connections to James CALLAGHAN who married in 1881
registered at Moruya, Emily Jane VAGG .
Emily's (b.1861 Broulee NSW) parents were John and Salome.

I am researching a Teresa Backhouse. On her daughter Eveline Jane
Smith's birth certificate (born 23 Sept 1877 Back Creek Araluen) her
birthplace is given as Illawarra and her age as 28. I can find no
record of her birth. There is an Ellen b. to John and Nancy in 1841 and
a Catherine b. to John and Mary in 1849 in Illawarra, Wollongong. There
is also a William Backhouse b. to John and Ann at Araluen in 1855.
Teresa would presumably fit somehow with these families.
I was wondering if anyone else

Hi,
Hope it is okay to give details of the Obituaties book but I have found it
to be very helpful in my research. I bought it recently on a holiday there,
when looking for more information on my Dawson/Hogan families.
The book is called Obituaries, Deaths, Inquests Pre 1901, Crookwell and
District and produced by the Crookwell and District Historical Society.
I'm not connected to the Historical Society but I found them most helpful
when making enquiries about my family and went to all sorts of trouble to

Dear List,
Am looking for family connections and information on:
Henry HAWKINS and Georgina HOLDER. I have no information on a marriage for them.
As far as I know they had two children, a daughter Caroline born Port Adelaide in 1877 and a son Isaac born 1879.
My family line is for Caroline. As she was married first in Moss Vale and second in Bangalow I believe her parents may have died in NSW but I don't know where. There are a few candidates for Henry on the NSW BDM index and a possible for Georgi

How common is it in families who were caught up in the Gold rushes in the SE
for generations after the 1850s to be miners?
My own McPhersons and McGregors (plus related McTavishs McGoogans Bowmans
etc)
were sawyers & agricultural workers in the Braidwood, Broulee area before
the gold rushes.
Then of course they were miners
Later generations some descendants are miners at Cooma, Cobar, Emmaville,
Hillgrove, New Zealand, ....
It seems where there wasn't gold to chase tin or copper or anything would
do. Once
Helen,
Do you have the MI's for the GILBERT and TURNER buried at Cooma?

Good morning
Seeking information on James PROCTOR, born Armagh, Ireland c1858, parents William PROCTOR and Elizabeth METCALF(E).
Family came to New Zealand 1875, James married, had children, then disappeared.
From letters, he was known to live at Catherine Hill, NSW, in early 1919.
It seems that his daughter Doris also lived in Sydney and married a CHAPMAN.
Any information on the family would be appreciated.
Kind regards

Try around the Ulladulla area - there are many Backhouses in that area, many

Hello,
I'm new to the list.
I have the Birth Cert of my G-grandfather Isaiah Mead , on which it says he was born at Cavan on the Murrumbidgee.
Would anyone have suggestions as to where Cavan was in relation to Yass/Goulburn ?
Isaiah's parents were James Mead & Eliza Reynolds.
Thanks,
Sarah
Dear Lister's,
I am searching for relatives of Trooper James Harry HAY. James's parents were John Thomson HAY & Isabella Jane LUMSDEN who are my GG Grandparents.
James died while in active duty on the 12th of October 1901 aged 19 years. James actually joined up aged only 16 years, but his parents didn't find out till it was to late.
