Hi Jan,
The marriage cert should give a clue as to who her guardian was as she was
under 21 when she married so someone would have had to give permission
(unless she lied about her age, of course!!)

G'day
Can anyone help with information regarding a jeweller, or a shop
owner who sold jewellery, named Lela Floyd (spelling may not be quite
correct) who was said to have a "lovely" shop in Adelaide St
(assuming Brisbane) "opposite the Railway Booking Office." I believe
the time frame would have been 1940's to 1960's. The lady was later
said to have moved her business to the Gold Coast. Alternatively, can
someone confirm that there WAS a Railway Booking Office near Adelaide
St Brisbane at that time,

Hi All
Does anyone have information on whether divorce in Queensland in the period
1889-1920 would be recorded? If so how and where?

Do you have either the birth certificate or the marriage certificate? There

You know, it JUST occurred to me, there is a fabulous postal directory on
microfiche at the Queensland State Library in Brisbane. It was issued every
year or two and I was able to follow the frequent movements of my family in
Brisbane using that source. Perhaps someone could check it for you as to
the jewelry shop/jeweler or you could contact the Library for help. Sorry I
didn't think of this sooner! Gail

Hi, Yes there was a government booking office in Adelaide street.
It was next to ANZAC Square. My brother booked his passage to America
there.
My brother Herbert worked for the Government Railroad.
There also was a jewelry shop across from there but I have forgot the name

I remember the lady more from the Gold Coast in the 70's or 80's.
I thought she had a dress shop, classy, but it could have been jewellery. She was a bit of a style icon I thought, but too old for me.
I remember her photograph in the fashion or social pages, well dressed and made up, with spectacles and jewellery. I seem to recall that she had an earlier manifestation in, or had come from, Brisbane. I'm not yet 60 but my mum is 84. Not that she was interested in shops, but I"ll ask her anyway.
Wait! There'
Thanks Kerry,
Is it possible to send me a copy of the streets from the street directory if
you have it, I know their house was right on the beach, and the last in the
street & possibly the estate. I could probably find it with a map (it's only
for me to reminisce). Can't remember seeing street signs anywhere. I have
also read a lot about it on the net, did not realize after the government
bought the houses off people, that they rented those houses back out to
other short term tenants until they were r
G'day Edna, Margaret & Kay Many thanks for your quick responses. At
least it appears I have the right city. I have checked White Pages
and Googled, done everything I could think of. Trouble is I am not
sure if the lady Lela Floyd was a jeweller (ie she designed and
manufactured herself) or whether she had a "gift" type shop which
sold jewellery. From the description "lovely shop" I am inclined to
think the latter. So the shop could have been named anything. I
thought perhaps if someone had access to

Thank you to those who replied to my post about the delay in getting
certificates from Qld Registry. On Saturday afternoon I sent an email
to the Registry office and it was replied to within a short time.
They must have been working overtime that day. I was advised that I
would receive the certificate this week. It arrived today - nearly 10
weeks since I applied. Not good enough!

Hi Carol
I have all the information on Laura she was born in St George and married in

The only thing I can think of is this.....on the left side of Anzac Square is a building which used to house the old State Govt Insurance Office plus others like the Public Curator etc. On the street level which is Adelaide Street there were and are a few shops. One is/was a tourist office and maybe there was a jewellery shop there too. This building took up the whole block and at the other side in Ann Street, I don't think there were any shops up at that side, but that is opposite Central Station.

Hi Listers
I,m making enquiries about a Mary Ann Hartwell born 1908 (maybe her mother's name was Laura ) in Queensland more than likely around Toowoomba - Brisbane areas, she may have married a Victor Joseph Lardner 1928 in Queensland that is all the information I have knowledge of, would anyone be able to give me any more information on Mary Ann e.g. where she was born, where she lived as a child and where she married, would be grateful for any information. Thank you.

Hi Kaye
I have a 1960's photo of that area if you want one. It does not show the
shops but it's taken from the top of the Bureau of Meteorology in Edward St
where I use to work in another life. Contact me off line if you want me to
send it to you.

See here for some (but not all):

Fabulous Barb; that's just the sort of information I was looking for.
I did think it more likely that this lady SOLD jewellery rather than
had a jewellery shop; a high class fashion shop sounds exactly right.
Hold the presses - there's more. I just thought to check a book I
have The Surfers Paradise Story by Alexander McRobbie (1982) and she
gets a mention on page 49 - spelled Leila Floyd (Jewelry - sic). She
is part of a list of Surfers Paradise retailers described as "solid
retailers who came early
Hi I am hoping that someone else is also researching the above name. I have in my tree a Victoria Ruth Wall b.1970-71 in Brisbane, Qld., .mother Kathryn b.abt.1950 in the UK
If you are also researching this particular family please contact me.

Also if you google "cribb island jackson" you will turn up many stories and
bits of history about the area. I found it entertaining reading even though
I have no connection to that area.
