1. Re: Name changes [1]
Chris, I'm sure someone else on the list can answer more expertly. Most of my early Germans changed their names around the turn of the century, Gottlieb Friedrich to Fred, Carl to Charles etc. I think it had a lot to do with the political situation in Germany at the time. The Kaiser becoming more aggressive and so forth. The fatherland was openly demanding that German immigrants in Australia support the Kaiser. There were marchs, rallies and so forth which caused some anti-german sentiment in some are

3. Re: Kretchmar's Band [1]
Chris & Kerry, Fred KRETSCHMAR, who founded the band, was my Great Great Grandfather. My aunt mentions the following in her diary... In 1869 Fred found employment in a brass band that travelled around the country playing at races and other sports meetings. In one celebrated incident the bushranger Captain Thunderbolt, who had been on the loose since September 1863, held up Fred's band at Bonno Bonno Gap whilst they were on their way to the Tenterfield races. Thunderbolt had the bandsmen play tunes whilst
4. THAT DREADED VIRUS [1]
Hi Everyone, I apologise for passing on the virus to anyone. It appeared this morning in the form of .mp3 file and had done the damage before I realised what was going on - blame it on the early morning and not enough coffee yet. Have scanned and removed infected files, emails etc. so hopefully am now free. The virus detector tells me that I am. Once again, my apologies Cyn

6. Re: Name changes [1]
Hullo Beverley and Janice, These name changes have created headaches for me too. There is one thing that I have wondered about. Whenever I have been looking at passenger lists or the BDM I have found the surname MULLER or M|ller, rarely MUELLER yet my mother who was a second generation Australian wrote her surname as MUELLER as well asthe other versions on her music books. I expected to find MUELLER in the German records. Has anyone any explanation? Thank you, Wendy ---------- >From: "Beverly"

Hi Kerry, I can only help with the birth of Wilhelm Johann Christian GERBER - he was a little difficult to find as he was listed as GORBER - Wilhelm Johann Christian GORBER - parents Hermann Ferdinand and Wilhelmine ROSENTRETER born 22 Oct 1879 - Q'ld reg no. 1880/6294 Q'ld deaths have only been released till 1949, so I can't help with either of these. 8. TETZLAFF, PERSKE, MANTHEI [1]
Wilhelmine TETZLAFF was a passenger on the "Herschel" from Hamburg which arrived in Bowen in July 1873. Her marriage certificate to Matthew MITCHELL (February 1875) named her parents as Johann TETZLAFF and Anna PERSKE and that she was born in Deutsche Krone, West Prussia. It seems likely that she was related to the PERSKE and MANTHEI families who were on the same vessel. The marriage took place in Mackay and it looks like she remained there in Mackay until she died in 1902. Does anyone have any TETZLAFF'
9. Carl Anger [1]
Dear Janice, Sorry, I was pre-occupied when you were in the T&DDFHS research centre the other week. I have found mention of Carl Anger in a book which some of the list may have, titled The German Presence in Queensland, Manfred Jurgensen and Alan Corkhill, eds, Dept of German, University of Qld, 1988, ISBN 0 86776 2527 (paperback) or 0 86776 246X (hardback). 10. RE: Gedcoms & Backup your Files [1]
Hello Albert You obviously belong to the 'other' Grulkes as well as the 'other' Schneiders. You seem to have the basis of a good story there. I hope to read it one day. Gedcoms are usually created out of 'File', 'Export' & then you have to work your way through the options. PAF5 has a miriad of options allowing you to split your data on family lines or, before a certain year or, by surname only & so on & so on. Family Tree Maker simply allows you to create a .ged of all your data. .ged files are comp
11. Greetings [1]
It seems that once again it is time to day all those nice things we are supposed to say to each other at this time of year. I would like to say Thank You to all those who have contributed so much material to this list over the year. I would also like to say that through the list I have formed some wonderful friendships and even found a few relatives that I never knew existed. I hope that one day soon we might meet in person. I especially enjoyed meeting Lorrae last July and sharing some time with her. I loo
12. an apology [1]
Jim and list, About a week ago I received an infected email with the subject line "Markham, Pelling, Tranby" and it appeared to have been sent by Jim Crighton. My computer had previously been infected with the Bad Trans Virus by a similar email sent from someone else on the list. After much trial and tribulation, I managed to remove the virus but the experience had been so traumatic to me that I have since then refused to open any attachments with or without the pop up screen warning me of the presence of
13. RE: Early Lutheran Church- Toowoomba [1]
Pastor Carl Anger was sent to Queensland in 1863 by the Gossner Mission Society. It appears that he may not have came as a pastor but a layman to work among German migrants in Queensland. In the early days it was common practice it seems that the government assisted a number of theological trained men form Germany to come to the stat to provide pastoral care to the migrants. In 1863 Pastor Schirmeister ordained him at St Paul's Lutheran c Church in Toowoomba and then installed him as the pastor. There was s

21. Surname Spellings [1]
I was interested to read about the variations in the speellings of some surnames. This can cause a hell of a lot of problems in research as I have found out..... My Prussian Ancestors that came to Australia on the "Eugenie" in 1873 were Ignatz ZELINSKI and Anna KUGASKI. They then settled in Tarampa. ZELINSKI has been found under records under the various variations ZIELINSKI ZIELINSKY ZELIMSKIE ZELINSKE GELINSKI GOLINSKI CHELINSKI Makes it hard checking records certainly...The GELINSKI GOLINSKI surnam
22. RE: JIM CREIGHTON [1]
Bev None of the virus' that i received came through rootsweb. I understand that rootsweb mailing list cannot and does not allow attachments. Therefore, we cannot get it through the list. The virus is being spread from us list members who are unfortunate enough to open an email directly from another list member, especially when so many of us are on so many lists. Your comment below suggests that your virus came through the list. ""(although they did not do such a good job this past week or so)."" Hope
