Hi Ian
At Toowoomba & D Downs FHS we have members indexing books because they are
next to useless for our members and visitors without an index. These then are
combined into a 'master index' which is a great starting point for research.
eg
Name index is Surname, given name, page no.
Local histories are also indexed for other than people:
Miscellaneous indexes include subjects like ships, newspapers, properties,
hotels etc. Towns to a lesser degree depending on the need and book. These
indexes of cour

Another lesson learnt - according to the birth registration -
Ida Augusta BEHM who was born on 5th June 1895 (1895/ 009218) - the
daughter of August BEHM and Bertha STASSBURG - was known as Edith
Auguste BEHM.
Amazing how names can change and we worry about 'identify fraud' today.

My mother, Annie DESJARDINS nee ANDERSEN attended the Laidley South State School approximately 1911 to 1918. I have two school photos for that period and would like to identify the pupils.
1. Does anyone know if there was a centennary celebration and book for this school?
2. Does anyone have any photos with the names of the pupils?
3. Does anyone have a roll of the pupils for that period?
I have contacted the Education Department's Historical Section, but they have very little except that it

Hi Ian
I would also be interested in purchasing one of your books please.
I agree with many people. The family may not need an index, but is that
the only reason you are doing it?
Are you looking for the connections to other families, who may be able
to offer photos, and more stories and find that missing link?
Please don't forget to add your contact details at the beginning - at
the bottom on the acknowledgment page is often best, but somewhere, so

Thanks to all those who replied to my listing as to whether I should do an index for my upcoming book on the Klein family of the Toowoomba area.
I can see now it would be a good thing to do an index for those people who think that they may have a rellie who could possibly be connected to the Kleins. It would save them having to read the entire book to check for names.
I am writing the book in Microsoft Word 2003. The Help section of Word talks about an index but it appears complicated. Perhaps someone
Hi Linda
I don't know if anyone has replied to you off list or not.
It depends whether the passengers came straight from a German port like
Hamburg or went to England and came from there.
If from Hamburg, the Emigrants from Hamburg books give place of
residence. This does not always mean birthplace.
Let us know which ships you are enquiring about.

Hi again David,
It appears that the other's in the grave with Hans and Emma Christsen, are
the infants who died, within the first year or two of their birth..
I am sorry that I don't have access to any resources to check on the names
of the other children, but there are quite a lot of them in the local
cemetery..
The full list of Christsen's buried in the Bundaberg Cemetery are:

Indeed, this can be frustrating. But ...
There is an old proverb that says that the best time to plant a tree was
twenty-five years ago and the second best time is now. With that thought in
mind, can I suggest you do what we have taken to doing in these
circumstances. As you read through the book in quest of your relatives,
compile an index as you go and then publish it on the WWW somewhere. Then
there will be index, albeit separated from the book its

H.T. Christsen, operated a Grocery and General Goods store in the main
street of Bundaberg in the 1940's and onwards...
I don't remember when they closed down..but I do recall going there as a
child in the 1940's with my mother to order the weekly groceries..
Mr. Christsen always filled a big paper bag with boiled lollies (free of
charge for myself and my sisters)..
He must have delivered the groceries, because we had no transport..
I also remember Mum buying lengths of sewing material and Mr. Christsen
Hi Listers
There has been some discussion on the list lately about putting an index in books. I agree that it is a very good thing to have an index in a book about the history of a district as it would save you reading all the book to check if a certain person is mentioned. But is it really necessary to have an index in a family history book?
I am nearing the end of a book on the Klein family on the Darling Downs and haven't decided whether to put in an index or not as yet. If one does a "Contents" at
