Hi all,
Just letting you know that on the Save the City of Adelaide site at
http://www.cityofadelaide.org is a stack of information about the ship
and the passengers who travelled aboard her.
Online at present are passenger lists from 1864-1874 (more to come) -
these have been compiled from existing records held in the Mortlock
Library, the SA Maritime Museum and from Adelaide newspapers of the day.
Some of them are downloadable in pdf format.
There are some really interesting things on the site - take
Dear Anne & Alison,
I have good news and bad news! There is a B&W picture of the building on
page 127 of the book, which I will scan and send to you separately (I've
deleted the original message by mistake and I need your personal e-mail
address to forward the picture on). The bad news is that even the picture
in the book is a bit out of focus and would appear to possibly be a "blow"
up of another picture. However, at least this is a start.
The write up accompanying the picture is as follows:

Yes Ian, you are dead right - we MUST think outside the square.
Just a note to those who are new or relatively new to the genealogy game
- NEVER underestimate the ability of anyone who has anything to do with
recording historical facts in any way to mis-spell, mis-record or
totally mess up any record. In over 25 years of research I, personally -
and no doubt just about everyone else who has ever tried tracing a
family's history - have found serious anomolies in spelling of people's
names, place names and o
You could also get in contact with John Day who has a website dealing
with Police Records - his site is at

what you want on his website - he might not have put up what you want
yet.

Just a note to say that the site has again been update with more
information on Captains and some other stuff as well.

only to find when I returned that I my computer had crashed. I am in the

Hello,
I am presently researching families of LEISFIELD, with connected AITCHESON, PLAYER, PUMPA, DITTRICH families, and many others connected by marriage. Any information would be welcomed and appreciated. I have information on one line of the LEISFIELDS, and bits and pieces on others.
Cheers,
Pam

Hi all,
a few days ago I noted someone looking for information about large
groups of Irish girls coming to Adelaide. I knew I had something about
it somewhere - so here it is
On 23 October 1848 the ship Roman Emporer landed 238 female and 8 male
Irish orphans in Port Adelaide. The ship had left London and Plymouth on
24 July 1848. They were described as "Union Workhouse orphans".. and one
of the cabin passengers on the same voyage described them as "A rough
looking lot".
The Roman Emporer by the way, was

On corresponding with a lady who has been looking into this family as well
there is now some doubt as to the accuracy of William's parentage. He may
in fact be the son of John TONKYN & Elizabeth TRUSCOTT of St Enoder - born
1791.

Greetings to all.
My grandparents Michael Slattery, married Mary McCarthy in Adelaide in 1883
and subsequently had 5 children and then in the mid 1890s came to the
Western Australian goldfields.
It is believed that Michael had at least one brother in South Aus, I am
trying to find a relation to this family somewhere out there. Only story
that I have is that one of Michaels nephews was a jockey. Would be pleased
if anyway can help of this issue. I have been hitting my head up against a

Lola,
Apparently the 'Pauline' made three voyages to SA in 1846, 1848 and 1849.
My ancestors were on the last voyage. I'm told that very few records exist
for German ships to SA pre 1850. I don't know why. You might try looking
at the "Register" for the list of passengers. Do you know for sure which
year they came out?

Does anyone know if there was a particular emigration program or employment or anything that attracted people to
South Australia from England and America in the 1830's - 1850's?
