Yes Marianne, 'making a wigwam for a gooses bridle' was used in my family. When I would ask my grandmother where Mum was she would say " gone up the Gorge to see the illuminated ducks'. (This being in Launceston as those living there would know) But all my childhood I thought she was saying 'the lemonade ducks'. It was as an adult, I found out that I had it wrong. Calling someone 'Duck', meaning Dear seems to really be a Tassie expression. I never really thought about it not being used in other states, unt

Evelyn Garzoli and Barrie Steer live in Bathurst, NSW; we are in our mid-60s. Barrie is the active family historian but his lines are all from England (arrived in Oz in 1969). Evelyn's are all from Tasmania where she has many, very-much-alive, cousins. Her mother's: 1) James Jordan (Ireland; "Queen"; Norfolk Island & Norfolk Plains) and his consort Mary Butler (London; "Lady Juliana" & Norfolk Island). 2) William Edwards (Derbyshire; "Duncan"; Perth & Scottsdale). 3) William Wells and Maria Griffi

Dear Friends, I have a little info about the Hillsborough in the following web page. I am a bit hazy about it, but the late Ian Nicholson was wonderful to me, when he gave me list of names and dates for this vessel. My 3 x gr.grandfather Capt.Robert Rhodes actually Captained the vessel for the return voyage of the "Hillsborough" to U.K. (from memory that is) He was Captain of the Whaler "Alexander" in Tasmanian Waters from early 1800's. They were whaling in the Derwent !!!!! and were down the Huon.. Jo

My name is Louise Leslie, I am 37 and live in Launceston, (which is also where I was born). I recall having begun searching for my ancestors at least as a teenager, but it is only recently, since getting on the internet, that I have been able to learn so much about where to look. This list has given me so many leads, and contacts with many researching the same names as myself. I value the support I receive whenever I post a query to the list, and I get a lot of insight from discussions on the list. Thanks

Hi, I am Sharon Lucey from Moonee Ponds, Victoria. I'm 45 years old and became interested in genealogy following my first trip to Ireland about 20 years ago, however my obsession with genealogy started about 7 years ago when I went on maternity leave for a year. I imagined that most of my ancestors were Irish as my father's surname was Lucey and my mother's Reilly. I got quite a surprise to find that I seem to have nearly as many English ancestors as Irish ones and quite a few of those arrived on our shor
