2. RE: marriages - consanguinity [1]
The common law of England & thus Australia followed the Bible: see Leviticus, chapter 18. However, the law diverged, and there are several cases of persons migrating to Australia in order to marry, when such marriages would be illegal in England. The Commonwealth of Australia's Marriage Act 1961, as presently in force, prohibits marriage between a person and: His or her ancestor; his or her descendant; and his or her sister or brother. So, currently, cousins are legal. Apparently, that hasn't always
3. Re: [AUS-Tas] emails - ADMIN [1]
No need to keep discussing, whether or not people are receiving e-mails, on list. Those that aren't receiving mail will not get the list messages anyway. Some ISPs are currently blocking Rootsweb mail. Those affected, on this mailing list, are with: austarnet, dodo, fl, hotkey, trump, webace, cairns, aunz, yp-connect, idl. I have contacted each subscriber privately explaining the problem. For others, if you are not receiving list mail it is probably because there hasn't been much lately 8-) regards, M

6. Re: [AUS-Tas] look up please? [1]
Hi Carol, I often wondered whether this was one of the few avenues available to women to escape from an abusive marriage? Divorce was difficult and costly to get and almost certainly resulted in the woman being branded a scarlet women. 7. Hobart Synagogue founders 1844 [1]
Hi there, I have a query in relation to Hobart Synagogue and ione of it's founding members Philip Levy (the one married to Leah Lazarus not Mary Moses). It relates to the circumscision register, can anyone help?? I wondered if Philips' sons were born before the opening of the Synagogue, what happened to those boys in relation to them being circumscised. Would they have waited? Lewis would have been 5 by then, almost 6. Polly

12. Early Newspapers [1]
I will be coming to Tasmania later in the year, and with limited time I would appreciate help as to where I will need to go to view and possibly get copies of parts of The Tasmanian; the True Colonist and The Hobart Town Courier for all of March 1837 and perhaps the ones before and after this period. Thank you Peter in Papamoa NZ
13. re Native Place [1]
I find it most interesting to see the changes of location from Native places as listed in Trudy's reply. I have often wondered how much these people moved around and how they did so given that most of them had few or no resources. Also I'm curious as to how they knew where each of their families were as most were illiterate or nearly so. It has always been my understanding that until the 1880s and later when trains were widely available, most folks were restricted to one day's horse ride or about 20

Hi Pat Ah, the joys of Catholics in Launceston in that era. There is a way to find the children - I found ALL my Bourke/Burke/Burk tribe because of course the children were baptised!! A copy of the records of St Josephs Launceston - later and now the Church of the Apostles for this period are in the Launceston Reference Library and they are VERY helpful. They found mine, copied them, and sent to me here in NZ. Have checked the pages but no O9Briens. So - email them; tell them name of parents and relevan

18. "Native" Place on Convict Records [1]
I refer to Malcolm's query: "Native" as a word refers to birth. "Native date" = date of birth. Hence, "The Nativity" is the celebration of the birth of Christ, not of where he resided. If people - convicts or clerks - misunderstood the meaning of the word, and for that reason, or any other, gave the wrong answer, so be it, but that doesn't alter the meaning. Indents often recorded Native Place, whereas the conduct records I have seen (VDL, 1920s, mostly) showed the location of the convict's next of kin.
19. Native Place. [1]
Hi folks, I recall my class teachers in Nelson, NZ stating in a social studies class I think it was - or it could have been geography - that one's 'native place' meant country where you were born or country of origin. If you lived in Australia but you were born in Ireland then you were a 'native of Ireland'. In the event of filling in Immigration Papers you are asked what your citizenship is and also to give the country where you were born if it isn't the same as the one where you are a citizen. Th

21. Re: VDL Company Records [1]
Hi again Lynn, I've just rung the reference section of the Burnie Libary, and the librarian confirmed that they do have a collection of VDL Company Records, consisting of Inward and Outward letters from and to London, among other material, spread over a long time frame. She told me too that the Burnie collection has been copied as part of the AJCP, and that the material in Burnie has only been indexed up to the 1840s thus far. She is also very happy to receive inquiries via this email address: Bur
22. Re: Cypress Street Cemetery [1]
I hope the following info on the history of the main Launceston cemeteries might be useful background for earching for tombstones. In 1906, the Launceston City Council opened a new municipal burial ground on the former Knight family estate, Carr Villa, at Kings Meadows. Except for additions to existing family plots, burials then ceased in the old 19th C cemeteries. Of these, the main ones were: the General Cemetery in Charles Street, the Anglican Cemetery in Cypress Street, the Catholic Cemetery in
23. Re: Warning: Convicts to PD (and Thomas Farrow/Faro) [1]
Ray (and others) I recall that we have discussed Thomas Farrow/Faro a few times. I have nothing more to add to what I believe is the basic position, namely that he was with the Buffalo convicts in Nov 1804. The information that I have, is based not only on my own research but in this case that of John Dent / Alma Rantzen with whom I have had discussions, meetings and other exchanges of correspondence. Their article referred in Tasmanian Ancestry was actually published early by mistake much to John's dis

Hi all Thanks to everyone who gave me so much info on Catharine Craun. You did a great job and I really appreciated it. Now that I have nearly digested all of the info, I thought you may be able to help me with a couple more names. Thomas Henry WHITE born abt 1835 Hobart Town married 9th May 1855 to Rose Anna MOORE born 1836 Hobart Town. Her parents are John MOORE and Bridget FARRELL. I would like any info on Thomas's parents (can't find out who they are) and Rose's parents, John and Bridget. Thanks once a
