What's really interesting about this issue is that my local LDS center has
the Vital Records CD's for use. Work that one out!

Dear Listees
Could people who know (or find out) do us all a favour and post addresses
where the AVR CD's can be purchased in the US and in NZ? The easier we can
make it for our overseas mates, the more likely they are to help us.
Do they have unique identification numbers?
Can they be purchased through WWW CD sites?

Hi everyone,
The Advocate newspaper reported today that the Tasmanian Family and Local
History Fair, held at Westbury last Saturday was attended by 700 people.
There were 43 stalls displaying various items of interest as well as talks
throughout the day. I would like to congratulate the Westbury Historical
Society for hosting the fair which will hopefully become an annual event
here in Tasmania. It was also lovely to meet some of the people who are on
this mailing list. Maybe we can get a few interstate
William MILES seems to be a fairly common name.
There were at least a dozen convicts arriving in NSW and Tasmania
with this name, so there must be several more as well.
I am looking for one William MILES who fathered 2 children, the latter
at Hobart in 1845. He was possibly unmarried and about 20-40 years
old at the time. Mother and child travelled to Victoria shortly afterwards.
Any advice on how to discover the fate of this person would be really
appreciated. Any information that could discount some of
Hi All, I was hoping that someone would be able to tell me if the Hobart paper BDM was online any where, or if it has put into a book or on film

Is there anybody researching the 2 convicts Thomas and John William
CROWHURST ?
Does anybody know which County in England these convicts came from.
Family folklore says that the Family came from France and when they arrived
in England they adopted the name CROWHURST,from the location that they
found themselves in.
There are only 2 Crowhurst town in England in East Surrey and in Sussex. The
IGI entries strongly suggests Sussex as the most likely County.
However I suspect that the 2 convicts may have come from
Dear Lee,
I am happy you learnt about your Kermode Street. Forgive me but I am
unfamiliar exactly where Port Sorrel is however is it near Mona Vale or
Ross. Both these places were mentioned in relation to William Kermode's
son, Robert Kermode. There is an interesting piece on him in these
encyclopedias:
"During the 1840s he began building a residence at Mona Vale-the third
family residence to be erected on the property-and in 1868 he entertained
the Duke of Edinburgh there during the Duke's visit to Ta
Hi Listers,
I am seeking any information on a James Palmer who was tried at Norwich in
June 1831 and transported for stealing. He arrived here in Tasmania in
1832.
Does anyone have a connection with the PALMER line?
Thanks in advance,

Douglas how do you suggest I tell my septogenarian brother, who has
recently given up smoking, that our ggparents probably needed the money to
live on and that all those teenage years he spent digging were most
probably in vain? Writing family history can involve compromise
especially when one's siblings are several decades older. The trade-off
for the address was that I include the treasure map in the writing up of
the family history. So keep your spade ready Douglas.

Hi everyone,
I'm an LDS member, but unfortunately we are NOT permitted to buy the AVR
CD's. They are only available for use within our Family History Centres
or other genealogical organizations and "legally" cannot be obtained for
personal use by any individual residing in Australia.
However, as you are aware, people have been getting friends from the US
and NZ to purchase a copy for them.
Hope this clarifies things.

Hi List,
Recently there have been a few postings here asking advice on seemingly
incomprehensible mysteries. Here's another one:
Has anyone ever come across the surname DERANIAN/DERAINIAN in their
Tasmanian research? It sounds Assyrian, like YOSSARIAN or SUBRAMANIAN.
The only reference I can find is the birth of a child Christopher
DERAINIAN, on 7 August 1864, father Christopher, mother Sarah nee BURBURY.
The father was described as a mariner.
I have a big problem with this birth, as what appear to be t

Hello Mary,
I'd appreciate it if you could tell me what your encyclopedia says about
James McDonald, Attorney General of Tasmania 1940 - 1946? or of any of his
children, Thomas Raymond MHA, and John Joseph MHA?
I am researching McDonald and Kean in Tasmania. The McDonald's are still
there, but all the Kean's escaped to Victoria I believe. I am interested in

Hi Charles; thanks for the help with info contained in the AVR. you

Hi Listers,
I noticed in the book 'Shipping arrivals and departures
in Tasmania' that the government of Tasmania owned a number of ships. Some
they brought (in England etc.) and some they had built in Tasmania.
I am looking for information as to how and when my great grandfather John
Trenley RANCE came to Australia. Various certificate that I have show his
occupation as a sawyer, ships sawyer etc. The time of his arrival in
Tasmania was some time between 1838 and 1843. I can't find him
