Dear Listers
Can anyone tell me when the current Belmont Baptist Church building in Mt Pleasant Road was constructed? By the brick work, I would suggest some time in the 1970's or 1980's.
I'm trying to tidy up some loose ends for a new Geelong Family History Group publication.
Regards

Hi Listers,
Just to introduce myself: I am Aussie-born, now in Canada, with roots in
the Geelong District (most nearly in Rokewood, Corindhap, Staffordshire
Reef) I am interested in contact with others from these families, and in
learning more about the area in the early days.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers
Evanie (Everett) Clack

Hi,
I don't know if I've joined the correct list but I'm wanting to trace a family who
lived and died in the Murgheboluc area. Margaret GIBSON nee DENBY died in 1879 and
is buried at Leigh Road Cemetery, Murgheboluc, Victoria. Can anyone tell me where
that Cemetery is please, and if possible, who I would write to for a grave site and
map? Many thanks for any help.

Hello Ainslee,
When you have trouble finding birth references like this, then always put in
LESS information and don't presume things. It's usually safer to focus on
the mother.
Hence ...
Mary Maud COLE, father unknown, mother Rebecca COLE, born Geelong in 1878,
Reg 16162.

Sue,
Do know there are still members of the Ackland family living at Lethbridge?.
Keith Ackland, Tall Tree Road, Lethbridge Vic 3332.
Keith is elderly but he knows a fair bit about the family. Also if you want
local history for Lethbridge contact Ray Kelly, English Road Lethbridge Vic
3332. Ray has extensive knowledge of the history of the township.

Hi Stephanie,
On my GRANT tree I have a Douglas BELL who married Elspeth GRANT in the
Geelong Parish (probably at Shelford) in 1853. Is he related?
Kind regards,
Sharon.

Hello All
At school during the 1950's in Victoria we used to have an assembly on
Monday mornings where we would sing God Save the Queen, our then National
Anthem.
Following the Anthem, we also used to promise to 'love our country, obey our
laws, love our parents and love our Queen' etc etc.
Does anyone remember our oath and the exact words we recited?
Lori
In loving memory of my dearly beloved husband John Ackland who departed this

at the call of Jesus rise to meet the bridegroom in the skies that day we'll
meet again" erected as a tribute of affection by his sorrowing wife Maria
Ackland and family.
Sacred to the memory of Maria the beloved wife of John Ackland 29th March
1881 aged 41 yrs and their beloved children May died 14 July 1884, John died

I am trying to locate relatives of Robert Fairlie Baird, who married Flora O'Shanassey in Geelong in 1877.
His parents were John Baird, b. Glasgow 1806 and Ellen Nicol.
John Baird's parents were Robert Baird and Margaret Fairlie, and Ellen Nicol's were John Nicol and Jane Fortune.
I know there were families of Bairds and Fairlies in Geelong in the 1950's, and wondered if any were related to the above.
I am related to the O'Shanassys and the Huddlestons (my name).

I don't know about Douglas Bell. James and John Bell were, I think, born in
the 1830's, possibly in Tasmania, or else arrived as young children. They
were the sons of a Captain Bell who came from Scotland to Tasmania. Captain
"Big John Bell" lived at "Bell Park", near Geelong.1821-1876.
I believe they were the uncles of my great-grandfather, Lewis Bell who came
from Dumfries Scotland in 1872, and established a sheep property "Alma" at
Booligal, NSW.
Will keep you posted if I find out any conne

Many thanks for that information which seems to confirm my suspicions.
As my Dad also spent 2 yrs in the "Citizens forces" 1929-31 it is likely that
his brother ( 1 year younger) may have also been involved in similar
Compulsory training before ist was ceased in favour of Voluntary training.
I understand there were Naval reserve(Cadet) units at Western Beach " TS

Hello again Listers
The majority of responses say this is the correct wording.
"I promise to love God and my country, honour the flag, serve the Queen,
and cheerfully obey my parents, teachers and the law".
