1. Re: [GEELONG] Re Searching for William STEWART & family in the1860's [1]
Hello again Robyn I forgot to mention my William Stewart b 1815 son of William Stewart & Jean Cruickshank was baptised at the Manse of Forglen, Banff and also his marriage to Helen Grant was shown as Forglen & Rathven, Banff. William Snr b 1785 was baptised "In Ryland" at Alvah, Banff and married to Jean at Forglen, Banff. So my Stewart/Stuart ancestors were mainly from Banff. Hi Jennifer, thank you so much for your help. I will work through them all and then I can see where they travelled across Victoria and NSW. I couldn't find Kildare on any online map of Vic. so searched for Kildare St and there is one in North Geelong near Bell Park so perhaps that was a settlement in the early days. Jennifer, may I ask another favour please? Could you see if there is a marriage record for Robert Laws JACKSON to Rachel STAPLETON? Up till your email I couldn't find a wife for Robert an

Hello Robyn I apologise for the delay in replying, I'm afraid I misplaced your email. I have not been able to get back as far as the early 1700's but I also have the name GRANT in the family tree although this is from a second marriage of my gg grandfather William Stewart who married Helen GRANT in 1848. They came to Australia in 1853 with their 2 daughter's Mary & Frances and settled in Geelong, Vic. Although my g grandfather Alexander was only 13 years of age [from the 1st marriage] he did not arri

Hello Marion, I realise this may be a little late and may not be of interest, and is away from Geelong, but there is a John Cooper Hall attached to the now Uniting Church in Benalla. Did your John COOPER by any chance belong to the Benalla area at any time? Could they be the same person? If so, and you can supply some further details we maybe able to help. 12. Re: [GEELONG] What is the difference between Alderman and Councillor? [1]
Hi Susie, I was about to suggest, as a councillor chosen by the councillors to be their leader/ Mayor, that it might mean a councillor who previously held an elected office/ Mayor, to show his stature. That was OK for Reeves, but didn't work for the others. Regards Ada Ada Ackerly. Hi Robyn William & Alexander are also common names in my ancestors. Do you have any connections to the Cruickshank name in Aberdeen as my Stewarts married into this family....Alexander, my great grandfather being Alexander Cruickshank Stewart/Stuart named after his grandmother's maiden name. I haven't been able to get back that far, only to James Stewart who married Susannah Stewart in Alvah, Banff in 1784. I wonder if there could be a connection between our families! Bill, I'll scan my photocopies of the photos and send them off-list tomorrow - for tonight, my desk needs a major tidy-up before I get out more sheets of paper, and it's my bedtime. The originals are in our church archives, and have been cut down to fit into one of those mounts for bid occasions which have a lot of smaller photos around one big one. I don't know how much of their backing remains. Our layout person will be scanning them properly for the book. Robyn Gross sent me the following in

Alwynne, That sounds like the right place. I'm transcribing Walcott 1861 & it seems to be all 3 & 4 story terraces with tenants ranging from Doctors to laborers with a mob of kids. I found a pickie at I googled Axford building Walcott uk. It's under art.com it's a Giclee print by John Nattes item #12263468A. Not a very inviting place but I don't suppose they had much choice then. Good reason to come ove
