Fellow Listers,
I realise that this is not a peculiarly "Gippsland" query,
but it's general to all research, so hope will be acceptable.
I noticed mention of the 1861 Victorian Census recently.
What form does this record take? Presumably it does
not include tha same detail as early UK census returns,
which list the names of all members of the household,
age, place of birth etc?
Could someone tell me in what years the Victorian census
was taken, what detail is provided and where it can be
accessed please
Hi Robert,
There is one at Lakes Entrance, but I don't have the details in front of me. Can get
them tomorrow. I do know some society's are willing to open over Christmas by
special appointment. It is worth asking. You never know your luck. As for
accomodation, I would assume you would have to book fairly well in advance.
Regards,Bronwen.

Hello List
This Sunday, August 15th, Sale Museum (Foster Street) will host an
exhibition of the early days of W D Leslie stores from 1886 to 1986.
John Leslie will be at the museum from 2pm to talk to locals, and trace
the history of 100 years trading of W D Leslie Pty Ltd from its
beginning in Raymond Street Sale in 1886.
As the centre of commerce moved nearer the railway station, Leslie's
moved to a position opposite Treloar's Cash Store and later to the
emporium of J Cromie, where they sold women's and
I have lost the plot here, I'm not sure who I should be addressing this
to. John, Bernie or Linda.
But I have noticed the following message regarding Mcgraths and Carty. My
Great Aunt Winifred Mcgrath married John Carty in 1883 would be most
interested to make contact with others researching the same line.

Hi List,
Have just been writing this up for AUS-HIST-WOMEN, a rootsweb mailing list
that is just beginning and looks like it will be great. So I thought I would
send it to the Gippy list as well, given that they are Gippslanders.
If you are interested in joining the list, you can subscribe to it by
sending an e-mail to either AUS-HIST-WOMEN-D-request@rootsweb.com (for the
digest) or AUS-HIST-WOMEN-L-request@rootsweb.com (for the list) that
contains nothing in the subject line and only the word "subscribe"
Dear List,
I know this is a long message but pleeeease read it.

Is there someone at Swifts Creek who would be kind enough to tell me if
my great uncle Reginald MILLS is listed on a WW1 honour board/plaque
anywhere in town?
He managed the Swifts Creek Butter Factory before going off to WW1 in
1915; he was the manager from at least 1912. Has anyone written a
history of this butter factory?

There should indeed be a list of ships deserters. G

wife

there graves and was surprised to see the the grave of George d 1935 and
Mary d 1921 had an old headstone but also George had a fairly new plaque

Dianne, you said

I wish I did know! I was kind of hoping someone would write back to say
something like 'the Duncan family was an old Omeo family' and then I would
know why. But no-one has.
Ethel is an offshoot from my direct line, so I know nothing about her. The
only family reason for her being in Gippsland, that I know of, would be if
she kept in contact with her cousins on t
Thomas and Caroline were at the "Cat and Fiddle Inn" Sowton, 6 miles east of Exeter, Devon from 1831 until their emigration in 1849. They married in
London in 1826, but think they had probably gone up there in search of work, as they came back to Colaton Raleigh, Caroline's home town by 1831.
What is your interest in Devon Penny's?

Hi List,
I have just found a cemetery that has previously escaped me!!!!!
I was not aware how large the Gormandale Cemetery is. I now realise it was
in the previous shire of Rosedale (therefore now in Wellington), and it was
not previously transcribed by Sale Family History Group.
Sale, following the success of their Sale Cemetery fiche, are now updating
transcripts for all other cemteries in Wellington shire (less the former
Alberton shire) and will be releasing them on fiche. But Gormandale slipped

Hi
My name is Allison.
I have set up a data base for convicts. I have 8 convicts in it already.
Its a free service
I am undertaking to help everyone, so if I could ask everyone on the list to
put their convicts on it too it will build up into a very good resource of
free information on the subject. It can be found by going to my page and
then going to the site called "modern convicts" the name meaning us ...the
descendants off.

My great uncle Ernest Watt was employed in 1880's as an auctioneer/broker
for M.Goold - Bairnsdale. In January 1889 he married Ellen Kirwan who is
shown stepdaughter of M.Goold - Bairnsdale. I am trying to determine the
natural parents of Ellen and believe she may have been born in Ingleside in
1856 and her father was possibly Francis Kirwan and mother was a Katherine
Cussen.
Presumably M.Goold from Bairnsdale would had to go through some formal
adoption process of Ellen Kirwan. Does anyone know where the

Hi Listers,
Thanks to those of you who responded to my request regarding the Cassilis

my email post office has been down for the past couple of weeks (and is
still only fragile).
