"The New Tourist's Guide & Victorian View Album, 1888-1889" in the rare book collection of the Latrobe Library has a section on Tinamba, complete with sketches. Here is a small excerpt which I transcribed many years ago:
". . . Frank George Hickox bought Watson's 60 acre paddock adjoining the railway station at Tinamba. Hickox built a large hotel with every convenience; parlours, bedrooms, piano, large dining hall, stables, commodious accommodation, paddocks and a splendid well (bricked and finished in a

Also Postcode book has Tinamba listed with postcode of 3859.
The area has been subject to bushfires over the years and possibly any pre
existing town has been destroyed in one of these fires. Check for newspaper
reports. My grandfather was listed as being a bridgebuilder and would
probably have lived in a town residence or small property only and not a

Hi Linda and the List. I would be interested to find out about "Mewburn
Park". One of my relatives, a Charles WEIR was born in 1856 at "Mewburne
Park" Gippsland.
I wonder if it was a property where his parents were employed or was it a
town.
The next child, John WEIR, was born in 1858 at "The Ridge" Rosedale where
parents Neil and Eliza WEIR were employed.

Hi Everyone,
Just a request please - can the lookups be asked for direct to Helen, who
has kindly made the offer. Her address is

I have got all the aol users bouncing (this is an ongoing problem for
several days) and requests to the list just bounce them off the list even
quicker. Because I think Helen is about to become one busy little bee. :)
Thanks!

Some list members may have noticed an article in Melbourne's Sunday Age
about the grave of C.J. Tyers being marked in the Melbourne General Cemetery.
Interesting article, and places Tyers, who was Gippsland's first Crown
Lands Commissioner in his wider context of earlier survey work. But it is
also an interesting example as to how newspaper articles can take things a
little too lightly.
This is the first time I have come across a claim that Tyers "surveyed a
route across the mountains" (as quoted tod

Hi Dean,
This appears to be a small run taking in the present Willung and Hiamdale
south of Rosedale, not quite going to Willung South. That is according to
Spreadborough and Anderson's "Victorian Squatters". Not to be confused with
Merton Rush west of Morwell.
Gazetted 1848 to Bayliss, mortgaged by him in 1866. 15,360 acres.

I am assisting a man in New Zealand who is interested in locating
any relatives or researchers of James Alfred Ralph and Mary (neeHunter) who
lived in the Jumbunna/Korumburra area of South Gippsland in the late

There are ties to this family to the Lal Lal area also. If anyone can help
this man, could you please e-mail me and I'll put you in touch.

Hi Linda,
This is a very important issue that you have raised.
The idea that 'truth' and 'fact' occur in newspapers has long been upheld. Everyone should remember that journalists are just that - people earning a living through writing transient pieces of entertainment. They are not historians and do not care if some small 'details' are not quite right. These small details are often then regurgitated as fact for years to come. Tyers is a case in point as he is a known figure to whom all sorts of gallant de
Hello Greg,
According to Barrie's book William Bardwell was at 76 Sturt Street Ballarat
1875-1891 : a long time.
Now, if you can answer some questions, I will try to date it nearer, but
one needs to actually "see" the whole mount and photo for extra clues as to
time taken. Fashions changed both for men & women, as did the card mounts.
Is the mount about 6x10 cm (carte de visite)
Is the mount a thin very bendable card or a strong firm card?
Is the card a neutral white/cream or is it coloured ( e.g. c

Dear Linda
Charles Tyers was highly regarded as a surveyor and, according to Cox's
Notes (vol 5), did fix the boundary between the colonies of New South Wales
and South Australia in 1839. His appointment to Gippsland was primarily to
settle boundary squabbles between landholders.
Charles Daley of Sale wrote, "his first attempt to enter Gippsland was from
the North, near the head of the Goulburn, a most difficult way of entry,
which was made by Hunters of Devil's River."
He returned with extreme difficult

Hello,
My name is Patricia Homan and I am contacting you to see where I can get
some information on the town of Alberton Victoria.
I think that it is in the southern part of Victoria and maybe your area.
I have found some names of people who could be my ancestors but need to know
more about the town of Alberton.
Hopefully you may be able to point me in the right direction

Hi List,
A newly discovered cousin of mine has sent me copy of a photo of my GGgrandmother who died in 1905. On the border surrounding the photo is enscribed "E. Newberry Yarram". I'm guessing that E. Newberry is the name of the photographer. Does anybody know where I could begin to search to see if this photographer took more photos of GGgrandmother or other relatives?
Thanks
Peter
