under resources on the AVG Home Page. In particular, there is now a listing

Just a reminder for those around Sale that the Sale Family History Group are
having an all-day session starting 10.30am on Saturday 3 June. Meredith
Fletcher will be talking about books on local history and compiling the
Wellington shire bibliography, Faye Guthrie is there in the afternoon to
talk about finding that elusive ancestor that is missing from all the
records. Cost $5 includes light lunch and afternoon cuppa.
Does anyone know anything about this Society? I note that in November,
1870, Dr Arbuckle (yes, that man again!!) chaired a meeting to form a
Caledonian Society in Sale. I'd be interested to know if any
records/minutes still exist and if so, where they are. What did the
society actually do, apart from (presumably) celebrating Hogmanay????

Hi All,
Just thought I would mention that Constance Tisdall was Headmistress at St
Anne's CEGGS during approx 1942/3. A house was named after her and I think
Gippsland Grammar retains a house called Tisdall/Hotham.

The bad news is: No, that photograph is not him, especially as in the next
issue of GHJ we corrected that caption to say that that school was Toombon.
The good news is that "Forerunners: the saga of a family of teachers" by
Constance Tsidall includes considerable material on him
Do any of these surnames ring a bell? If so i would love to hear from

Hi List,
I have just popped over and looked at John's home page, and think he knows
all I know about the Fregons, plus more. But one of the McCoys (Beth, from
Maffra), who is connected to the Fregons, told me one of my all-time
favourite stories.
In the big fire of the 1920s in Omeo, the local chemist, Mr Perry, realised
his shop/residence was burning down. So he rushed up starirs and pushed his
piano (which was his most important item), off the first-floor balcony to
try and SAVE it.
It didn't work.

Could anyone tell me when Butchers Creek (near Metung) was renamed Box's
Creek? Also does anyone have a source for the Butchers Creek massacre which
is listed in the chronology as occurring in 1841?
I am looking for descendants of Robert Crawford who died Wonthaggi area 1922, and Ella Curties McCaul. The couple had four sons I know of, Colin Crwaford b circa 1908, John Curties Crawford b about 1909, married Beatrice Kimpton, (I think this John was radio announcer with ABC) Robert Curteis Crawford b 1911 married Nora May ?? and John born 1919.
Thanks

Hi Lucy
I know of The Walhalla Chronicle which was published in January 1870.
It was still going in 1890.
There is a single copy availale in Mitchell Library Sydney but almost all
others seems to have been destroyed by fire etc. Possibly some privately
owned. There are also some at La Trobe Library Melbourne dated 1882.
Perhaps some other readers know of any other Newspapers for thea area .
A James Rogers was a coach driver in Walhalla area.

I had an identical response to my e-mail and after reading it I don't have a
problem with the system as it stands. I wish I could get other, less
informative, certificates as cheaply!

Gerry Kennedy (bloke from Traralgon, theatre historian), wrote "The Prince
Regent Theatre, Sale: Gippsland's Picture Palace" in Gippsland Heritage
Journal No.13 (1992). I know of no stand-alone history for it. He may have
written in a theatre history mag, and used the word "tin can" in it. I think
it had a wonderful pressed tin roof.
There is a germ of truth there - at least Gerry comes from Traralgon.

Hello,
My name is KAREN CARR - I was born at Maffra Vic (1952) and am researching
the Carr family. A relative in Tasmania put me onto your address. I believe
I am descended from James Stanley Carr and his second wife (?) Annie Brown.
My parents were William Thomas Carr and Ellen Veronica Kendall.
Would appreciate any advice from you.

Hi List,
This is just to let you know that the Deputy has been busy again, and has
added maps of the Gippsland Shires to the AVG home pages (see URL in my
signature).
All you need to do is go to the Home Page, from there to Resources and from
there to the maps. They may take a little time to download, but could be
helpful if you do not know which modern shire your family areas are in. In
particular, there are heaps of resources in the resources page if you fall
within Wellington or East Gippsland, and all
Hi List,
Just to let everyone know that I have changed the mailing list default
again, so that if you click "Reply to sender" on the emails, it will go
automatically to the list unless the original sender has an over-ride set.
This means we will all get to see you replies, so please check to make sure
there is nothing in them you do not want to send to the list. If people can
just try to not send little one-liners like "thanks Bill" back to the whole
list, instead of just to Bill, it might just work.

HI Listers,
I am currently researching George POORE and his family who moved around Gippsland in the 1860's to the 1880's. George ,after marrying Emily DAVIS in B.B. in Wood's Point, searched for gold in Grant, Gladstone Creek, Murrindel, Glenaladale before settling in Iguana Creek where the family ran the Miner's Inn Hotel. If anyone has any information about this family I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
Don Poore.
