2. 1800`s GOLD LICENCES [1]
Hello Listers, In a recent response to an e-mail i sent PRO in Melbourne regarding miners licences in the 1800`s i was told that no records exist regarding the early diggers licences such as receipt books etc. Can you tell me if this is so. If there are no records of same is there any other way of discovering whether a certain person was engaged in the business of mining, such as shire records etc. Regards from Norman A in the Yarra Valley

6. [AUS-VIC-MINERS-RIGHTS] Records of Miner's Rights [1]
Hello all I am new to this list and am wishing to understand the process of obtaining a Miner's Right. I am researching a family who mined in East Gippsland back in the late 1890s. The husband and his brother, along with two other men, were partners in a mine. Some time later, the wife took out a Miner's Right in her own name so that she could either work the mine herself or employ a miner to work in it for her, while her husband was occupied on another engineering project in the area. Would there

Well you can't really. The electoral rolls list occupation, not employment. Once on the electoral rolls people rarely changed their occupation, unless they changed their address. (I haven't changed my listed occupation since I last changed
12. Buninyong [1]
I am working towards preparing a Biographical Dictionary of Buninyong (Victoria) 1837 to 1901, and am looking for interesting families to include. These need not necessarily be those who figure prominently in the history of Buninyong - even the miner or labourer who battled to raise a family will assist in giving a socio-economic profile of Buninyong. I am in urgent need of profiles on Buninyong women. There would have been some really interesting stories. Do you have one? I expect there to be between
13. [Miners Rights] duke extended gold mining co [1]
Does anyone on the list have an interest in or information on the "Duke Extended Gold Miming Co" The mine was located in the Bet Bet valley north of Maryborough, central Victoria. It commenced about 1909 and ceased when the Government sold it up in Oct 1921. Also can anyone advise where I might find information of a general nature, regarding what sort of income a landowner might have received from the company who had a mine (deep Leed) on their land. I am trying to get an idea of how a mine on their prop
14. [Miners Rights] Miner's right (no. 10149) [1]
Hi All, I have just viewed a copy of an ancestor's probate record and it mentions a residence area allotment held under Miner's right (no. 10149) situated at Oak Street, Golden Square, Bendigo. My ancestor's name was Anthony James McMAHON and he died in 1921. Anthony was a railway employee, he was married to Bridget GODFREY and they had ten children and two adopted children. I have some more details about some of the children but little about Anthony and Bridget. If anyone can tell me anything about mi

G'day Kevin, The 'Historic Gold Mining Sites' reports collection is now available on-line at 'Heritage Victoria'. See: This includes reports about 'historic gold mining sites' as well as 'plotted histories' These reports are well researched and form the basis of the classification and registration for the sites of state significance that are protected under the Heritage Act. The reports also include further references for more detailed Mining details. The 'Duke E
16. PHILLIPS, Joseph a Miner [1]
We are searching for more information about Joseph Nicholas PHILLIPS who was born about 1835 (aged 23 at marriage in October 1858 in the District of Beechworth, Victoria, Australia and aged 69 at his death in Dec 1904). His occupation is listed as a Miner. His marriage certificate (20 October 1858) it states that he was born in VENICE, Italy. However on his Australian Naturalisation papers (in 1902) it states that he was born in FIUME, Austria. And on his death record it is VENICE, Italy again. Josephs pa

Hello Ken and others, I have some Miners Rights from around 1900 but they seem to be more like a rates notice as in they were for the house and land. Were there two types? G'day Mary, We only wish !!!! Very few records of Miners Rights exist. Miners Rights were more like monthly or quarterly 'tickets' as they had a 'used-by-date'. When Miners Rights were issued, a 'butt' was left behind in the book. Only a few books of 'butts' survive and are at the State Archives. Some lucky families may have original 'Miners Rights'. 'Exemptions Certificates', exemption from having a Miners Right, were also sold to store keepers, etc. A few years ago it was suggested to the Gold Mus
