Hi all,
I've just received a gedcom from a family member and there is a slight anomaly.
I am hoping someone can check it out for me please.
Christiana MITCHELL (nee SIRL)
died 29 April or May 1924 and buried at Bethanga.
I have a photo of the grave but I can't see what the inscription is.
It's a huge crypt with (from memory 6 or 8 people buried there).
I looks a bit like a roman building with 4 pillars at each corner of the
roof. However, the roof doesn't completely cover the base.
If anyone can check
Hi Denise,
That fits with his timeline. He arrived in Albury ca 1849, tried farming at
Gerogery in 1851, his youngest daughter was born that year, so it was off
to the goldfields soon after.
I don't think "doctoring" paid all that well back in those days - he was
always in court trying to recover his fees!
Cheers

My great-great grandfather Daniel Kirby was buried at
the Yackandandah cemetery in November 1899. I am
trying to discover the best way to find a record of
where in the cemetery his grave is located and whether
there is a marker, in order to decide whether to drive
up to there to take a photo. I wrote to the cemetery
trust at the start of the year but received no reply
so I would welcome anyone's ideas on this one? With thanks!

The house opposite was Morgan,s property originally selected by
John Strickland who was "family" to the Morgan,s, perhaps a daughter married
a Morgan. Haeffner,s property was further East,it joined Peter Drummond,s
Digger,s Rest Hotel property up near Star Lane.
There are still Snow,s in Beechworth , have been there for many years, one,
Mary, married my mother,s cousin Walter Methven, and Frank Snow managed the
Beechworth Gas Works.

Doug, if you can find any mention of the Milawa Creamery etc. at Carboor say
1891-1903 on Forest Park Estate, it would be appreciated.
I thought perhaps there may be in the minutes some reference to this.
Just when you have time.
Thanks Doug

Hi Denise,
Many thanks for the obit. Poor old Jeffrey - it sounds like he suffered. It
must have been hard for a doctor in those days. The "ill-provided for" bit
is interesting - he left over 700 pounds in his will which I would have
thought was a reasonable sum in those days.
This is the third obit I've read and I've learnt something new each time.
Just goes to show the benefits of looking in more than one newspaper.
Now if only I could find a photo or picture of him!

Good evening all,
I know this is a long shot, but in the very early days, circa 1860, there were two bakers in the northeast. One became a Lawyer, the other a successful Vigneron.
I'm hoping someone has read some history and they know the answer.
Who were these men?
A long shot, but I've got to ask!
Denis
Thanks Phil. Unfortunately the link to the book itself doesn't work. But
I've checked the National Library catalogue and they have a copy :-)

Hi all,
Could someone tell me when the "rush to Spring Creek" took place? The obit
for my gg grandfather Dr JJ Keatinge says that he "started for the rush but
being unaccustomed to the usages and hardships of a digger's life, gave it
up and returned to Albury and resumed the practice of his profession".

Hi folks,
The link to the Staghorn Flat book (quoted below) is to my personal
website. You can imagine my surprise when I saw it pop up on this list!
The book was written by Ian Touzel who is a
friend of mine. He lives in WA.
I've been helping him to promote the book and I made a website for him
http://staghornflathistory.com/ but unfortunately due to technical
difficulties that site is down at the moment.
Use the email address above to send a message to Ian, he may know
If your research interest was employed by the Government in 1858 in the Ovens area, I can look up his name, station, salary and religion - if he is listed in the paper OMA 29.6.1858

I have that year for the oMA, so shall have a look for you over the weekend.
