How nice to hear of Gilpin's stores Alan! My mother described them as the
fore-runner of Coles - when there were Coles and Woolworths in every town
and main shopping centre back in the 1950s. Long before they became
supermarkets. Gee, I remember Coles in Kew when I had two young children
and the first was not born till 1970. Back then it was Dickins
supermarkets, Crofts, Nancarrows - then Coles New world then just New World
now back to Coles.
Back to Gilpin - I worked for a time in the kitchen of a hom

Hi Anne,
Firstly an apology ,I did not get to Family History Soc on

eventually.
Good Evening All,
While browsing the Victorian Public Record's web site today I came across
the above. The document is a 3 page pdf and should be of interest to anyone
researching inquests. The link is

However for general interest I have copied below part of the text on page 1.

individual. In Victoria up until mid 1986, inquests were held before a

Hi there
Am researching Irena May Dyble nee BROWN who died in Beechworth Mental Asylum in 1950. Her husband Frank Dyble committed suicide in 1936, a grandchild was possibly living with them, Irena was deaf and blind by 1936. She lived with an 'unknown' family member from 1936 to 1941 until she was admitted to Beechworth.
I am hoping maybe this jogs a memory somewhere with someone. I know the child became a ward of the state, so I would suspect is very elderly if not dead.
Cheers,
Polly

I am researching the siblings of my great grandmother, Elizabeth McOmish who came to Canada in 1857. With a great deal of help from the AUS-VIC list I have located her brother James and sister Margaret in Victoria. James died July 17, 1885 at Three Mile Creek, Beechworth. He had been in Australia since about 1853 and was a goldminer. He married Lizabeth Mary Gordon in 1873, but they had no children. Margaret arrived in 1860, married Thomas Morrison in 1864 and died in Myrtleford September 30 1927. Tho
Good Evening All,
Does anyone know the whereabouts of a shop in Ford Street, Beechworth around
1939 which was a drapery store and owned by Jeffrey's- Jeffrey's if I
remember correctly was a forerunner to Dimmeys etc. I'd like to know if
possible just whereabouts in Ford Street it was.
Many thanks.

Hi i am hoping someone might be able to help me please.
I am looking for help in finding ANY information regarding the Heal(e)y family in the Wangaratta area from about 1879 to 1888. ( It may have been earlier.)
William Healey was married to Ellen Agnes Russell and had two children Elizabeth in 1879 and
James in 1881
(I have the birth index details for both of these).
William Healey also had another son in 1881,
my grandfather

Hi Anne
I don't have an answer to your question, but from my reading of
correspondence files in PROV, I gather the government officials were
concerned about the selling of sly grog by people they considered to
be not respectable. Power of refusal seemed to rest with the local
police. The following may help from the PROV website outlining the
responsibilities of the Chief Secretary's office.
"LIQUOR LICENSING 1870-1979

Good afternoon list members,
A new book is available on the northeast of Victoria and is intended for
family and local history researchers. This book has nearly 1000 names and
is also indexed.
The information was randomly taken from two local newspapers printed during
the years 1876-1900.
The book gives the reader news, gossip, business and family matters in areas
such as Tallangatta Valley, Mitta, Eskdale, Upper Murray, Khancoban,
Tumbarumba etc. - as reported in two newspapers, The Ovens & Murray

Hello Dawn,
How about back to the 1930" s when Coles sold , "Nothing
over two and sixpence" in their stores, they do
say that if you bought a pair of socks or shoes you would
probably pay 2/6 for each one.
Those were the days when you could buy a gallon of petrol
, one shilling, a malted milk sixpence, a hot pie
fourpence ,and two penny ice creams for two shillings,
which is now I think supposed to be twenty cents.

Oliver Gilpin is a local! He was born at Euroa.
There is a book on him written only a few years ago, by a descendent if
anyone is interested. It is called 'Just a pocket for the money' by Muriel

I think Coles bought his empire.
