Greetings listers,
I have just re-subscribed to this mailing list after an absence of a few
weeks. It's good to be back.
This request may be a little outside the Western District area, but someone
could know about it. I have a family wedding certificate for the marriage in
1884 of John Collins and Elizabeth Frewen. This marriage took place in
Echuca. The place of residence for both bride and groom is given as
Tatailla. I assumed this meant that Tatailla was a station property, or

Hello Sandra,
I think you'll find that William WOODFINE was born in London c.1828 -
definitely not Ararat which didn't exist at that time. You still won't find
a birth certificate because civil registration didn't commence until 1837
however you may be able to find a baptism.
You would be far better off obtaining his marriage certificate which would
give far more information about his parents than his baptism (or even an
English birth certificate after 1837).

Hello Listers,
Is anyone able to tell me whether the immigrant ship 'Shand' docked at Port
Fairy (Belfast) in January 1855? My 2xgreat parents Susan and William BARKER
along with other members of their extended family were on board. I thought
they disembarked at Portland but today received some information that they
disembarked at Port Fairy.

Richard Porter married Mary Jackson in Hamilton on 12th March 1874. His
marriage certificate says he was 54 years old and a widower, with 5 children
alive and 6 dead. In very small writing underneath is written (25th June
1852). Would this be the date of his first marriage?
Many thanks

Hello Liz
Thought I would ask do you have a Joe Martin BUCKLE of Cororooke near Colac

Hello Jan, thank you for answering my query. The book sounds really
interesting and I would love to read it. Did you obtain it from a

Hello Sandra,
You may be able to find a birth certificate - or more likely, you would find
a copy of a transcription of the original certificate. The earliest
certificates were in fact not birth certificates but certificates of
baptism. The transcriptions of these certificates took place after 1850 when
civil registration became a legal requirement. You may be lucky enough to
find your William - otherwise, a marriage certificate may be your next
option. Your best bet would be to check the website of the Vic

In reply to Sandra Edwards query about births at the Cascades Female Factory being registered - I am at present reading a book by Tony Rayner called "female factory female convicts" which gives the history and the conditions in the female factories, including the Cascades. On page 120 it says that not long after the Cascades was established the names of the fathers were obtained because the Governor wanted them to pay maintenance for their baby. I haven't finished the book, but there is a large bibliograp

I have been a member of this group for less than a week and already I am
overwhelmed at the generosity of spirit and kindness that has been shown to

I am now facing a bit of a challenge though. My mother was born in Hamilton
in 1918 and placed in the Presbyterian Babies' Home in Melbourne when she
was two, and then later adopted. She did not find out she was adopted until
she was 70, so you can imagine what a shock that was. I obtain

Hi Jenny
Thanks for the suggestion, staying away from funding applications if
possible, that is how we started the website many years ago.
I have a couple of 'Free' options as possibliities, no strings, no
paperwork, no committees!
I whole heartedly agree with Mellissa!
I notice the Genealogical Society of Vic is hosting the sale - no doubt for
a commission which will go to their operating funds and doubtless will be
ploughed back into providing more and more assistance to Researchers and I
note also that Ballarat Genealogical Society also is hosting the sale and
again no doubt for commission on the sale which likewise will go into the
operation funds of the Society thus providing more resources for
Researchers - so who is the l
