3. Re: [AUS-VIC-West] Re: Camperdown Fire Brigade Band [1]
Hi Tricia and All The brass bands were a big thing in the Western District in the 40s and 50s. Both my brothers were in the band from a very young age, and my sister learned the cornet but never quite made the band. I don't think there were any women in the Mortlake one in that time period. The towns that got together for regular recitals seemed to match the towns in the football league, so it was the towns in the Hampden League, Colac, Camperdown, Terang, Mortlake, Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Cobden, who to

7. Re: Camperdown Fire Brigade Band [1]
Hi List, I have found a book printed on the 50th anniversary of the above band - it is called "The Band Plays On - Camperdown Fire Brigade Band - 1938 - 1988"; in this book are numerous photos of the band, and in one of them I found my father! I never knew he was in the band, and unfortunately there isn't a date on the photo, and I there are no remaining family members to tell when the photo was taken. If anyone has a copy of the book the photo in question is on page 20. Someone with ties to the band may
8. RE: [AUS-VIC-West] Re: Camperdown Fire Brigade Band [1]
Hi Tricia, Beryl and others Earlier this year my Dad (92 in November) was reminiscing and said that his father's greatest achievement (also Robert (Bob) O'Neill) was in being instrumental in saving the Camperdown Fire Brigade band from extinction. I'm not sure what year at this stage. I picked up several photos from a shed at Dad's house in February, which are of a function. . . possibly my grandfather's retirement after 35 years as captain of the Camperdown Fire Brigade. As a really young child (mid 1940s

Hi Beth, The book does not have a publishing date nor a publisher. There is a message from B.J.Sinnott, Secretary and Captain Peter Stephens 1988 and there are photos of the 1988 Leura Festival Procession, so I think it would be late 1988 or early 1989. There is a list of Presidents, the first one listed - R. O'Neill 1939/40 "The inaugural meeting to form the Camperdown Fire Brigade Band was held on November 8, 1938 and the "Camperdown Chronicle" reported the meeting's outcome on its front page: FIR
11. Re: VAUGHAN, Melb & Belfast [1]
Hi Gloria Thgese events are most likely baptisms which expalins the bulk entry from the early church records. The State of Victoria did not come into being until 1851 and records prior to that were recorded in NSW as we were the Colony of Port Philip. I think the year 1855 was about when Victorian BDM records got into full swing (happy to be corrected on that one). The group of 1852 baptisms will probably have birth dates ranging from about 1843 up to about 1853. Working back from the deaths gives ap

13. Re: [AUS-VIC-West] Re: Camperdown Fire Brigade Band [1]
Hi Beryl, Thank you for your memories, I didn't realise that the bands were so important, luring bandmasters to the town, I realised they were popular entertainment, but ...... The photo would have been pre WW2 as he left Camperdown and fought in New Guinea, and I was trying to narrow it a little more. When I was a young teenager, I remember a friend of the family (Joan Pitcher), telling about the night Camperdown won the football grand final, and a group of revellers, my dad, and Joan being two of
