I am wondering if someone could help me access records for Austro- Hungarian military officers around 1880-90. An uncle, Stephanus Csordas, died while he was serving. May have been born in Titel, Hungary, now Serbia.
Thank you for any help offered. Charlene
Yes, there are a number of experts out there I can contact. Please email me a photo and I'm sure these fellows will reply within a few hours with complete information.

I am trying to find out what regiment, division, etc. my father served in. I only have a b&w picture of him in full dress uniform. He has a sword by his side and his headress is a stiff tall black cap with a visor and a black ostrich feather which goes under a brass chain and down one side of the cap.
Hello list,
I have a photo of what is supposed to be my great-great grandfather in what
appears to be a military uniform circa 1850s. I assume he was in the
Austro-Hungarian military, however that may not be the case (one relative
said "Prussian," although that does not seem likely to me). Is there anyone
out there who has knowledge of these old uniforms who might be able to
identify the branch of military and, if possible the rank? Or can anyone
point me to a good book or other resource with illustrations

In 1915, the KuK Army was not on the territory of Italy.
Isonzo is an italian name for Slovenian river Soca. The so called Isonzo
front or Soska fronta (see Google for more info) was more or less following
the whole length of this river. From the KuK strategy, it was pure defence.
Only in 1917 it was broken through byt the KuK and Germans, who stopped at
Piave river in Italy.
Details of Janos Deak might be in the Military archive in Vienna.

Hi, Frank!
That's a very informative message you posted! I had heard before about the
"Grundbuchbldtter"; but I haven't had any luck getting these or other
Austro-Hungarian military records of my father from the Vienna War Archives.
All they say is that the records for the WWI period were sent to the
succesor nations into which Austria-Hungary was divided. I suppose my
father's records were sent to Romania, because his birth village is now in
Romania; but I have been told it'd be extremely difficult, if no
Edith,
If you have a scanner, Email me a color copy JPG file of the photo. I may
be able to identiy it.
Sword: Cavalry all had swords. Officers all had swords. You can tell a
common soldier from an officer by the tassel on his sword. The Officer's is
big and golden, the common soldier's is darker and smallish.
NCOs - full Corporals and Sergeants also carried swords.
NCOs and Officers had at least one star on their collars.
If your photo does not have a star on the collar that would make it a
Charlene,
Frank Soural has a copy of the 1880 Schematismus and can tell you if your
ancestor is listed as an officer. Write me if you want his Edress.
Once you know he was in that index and what unit he was with in 1880 you can
write the war archive in Vienna and ask for his record.
Or you can get it on film from the LDS: Qualifikationslisten is the
keyword to use to search the 2002 catalog CD to find the officer's records.
