17. [AYR] Thomas Hay and Agnes Ness of Coylton [1]
Greetings All, Is anyone researching this Hay family? After another trip into Scotlandspeople I strongly suspect that the first wife of my William Wilson was Agnes Hay, daughter of Thomas Hay and Agnes Ness of Coylton. Agnes was born in Coylton, 1828 married William Wilson in 1854 in Tarbolton and died in 1855 in Tarbolton. Once again there was no image to view in Scotlandspeople so need to verify this couple some other way. Searching through this lists archives I see that there has been a bit of interes

Norman, I can understand what you mean ! You are lucky that your ancestors gave each child there own name ! My family named and renamed generation's "John Hamilton", do you know how many "John Hamilton's " there were in Scotland, to many !!!! I have noticed that many of my early ancestor's used either madien names or surnames as middle names. I have John Hamilton who married Nancy Agnes Rayburn, there son was John Rayburn Hamilton. I hope you find the answers you are looking for ! Trisha Hamilton-Leo Buffa

20. [AYR] Glasgow street names [1]
Hi listers, I have just come across this great site which some of you might find helpful http://www.glasgowguide.co.uk/info-gstreets3.html It lists most of the old street names and cites the origin of the name. For example, Goosedubbs (which was recently "on the list" got its name from the fact that the Provost's geese grazed there, not (as I thought) from being the place where poultry was killed and plucked. Iron ore occurs in nodules about the size of a (ten pin) bowling ball, but slightly flattened. They are normally mined by open-cast these days, but in the past miners would tunnel in like coal miners, often from a drift in the side of a hill. Coal is often found in close proximity, so smel
