1. Re: [AZORES-L] Hispanic??? [1]
Similarly, 20 years ago in California State Government when there was a push to show a department had Hispanic employees, many with Portuguese names similar to or the same as Spanish were included to bolster the statistics. Back in 1995 in the newsletter O Progresso I included this excerpt from an article the Portuguese scholar Eduardo Mayone Dias wrote for the newspaper Brazil Today: On filing a police complaint Dias was asked by the clerk if he were Hispanic. Define the word Hispanic, Dias said. "Are
2. Re: [AZORES-L] ancestry [1]
Jorge: Hispanic is capitalized because it comes from the geographic Hispania, the area on old maps that includes both Spain and Portugal. The opposite of "white" is "black" and that is not capitalized either. I'd guess that Negro is capitalized because it comes from Negroid which, like Caucasian, is capitalized, both originally having geographic origins. But I'm not an ethnologist or geographer. Joao says he is Latin. In the USA, the term "Latino" is used synonimously with Hispanic, and does not includ
3. [AZORES-L] Those that went to Brazil [1]
My grandmother, Amelia Naciemento, had two older brothers (I would love to find out their names). She came to the USA at 14 and all that she could ever tell us about her two brothers was that they left on a ship from SaoJorge to Brazil. That would have been probably 1900 to 1910. Does anyone know if this was a common destination. What was going on during these years that would have affected economy on SaoJorge. Thanks, Maggie Margaret "Maggie" Sutton RN, MSN, FNP

Paul: No, Portuguese do not consider themselves Hispanic -- at least the descendants of Portuguese, whether from the Azores, Madeira or the Continent in the U.S. do not consider themselves Hispanic. Hi all! I hope those who get the FoodTV channel had a chance to catch the Emeril's special last night. He was going back to his hometown Fall River, Mass. and visted lots of restaurants while there. He also showed them making Portuguese sausage, and talked about the community. If you did miss it, you're in luck because they'll air the show again on June 28, 2003 at 3pm Eastern time. 11. [AZORES-L] DA SILVEIRA, Flores [1]
I live in Sydney, Australia, and I'm looking for information on my Portuguese ancestors. My great grandfather was Manuel Antonio DA SILVEIRA, born 1836, in Flores. I don't know when he arrived in Melbourne, Australia but he married there. His father was Ignacio Antonio DA SILVEIRA, and his mother was Anne da Jesus Raimondo. Unfortunately, that's all I know. Any information will be gratefully received. Eryl (da Silveira) Brady

Frances, Our Azorean ancestors are an interesting people. And researching them often seems to lead to unexpected and rewarding information. I am very happy to know you had some success. This reminds me of an example and technique I use and will share hoping it may help someone. Sometimes when I search the Ellis Island Ship Manifests. I find that if I put in only the last name of the person, then when the name list comes up, I would go to the Manifests next to that name from the area I wanted to rese

15. Re: [AZORES-L] Slaves in the Azores [1]
Very well written and researched, John. My wife's family knew of woman in Ponta Garca that was known to be a descendant of slaves. Apparently the whole village knew about her ancestry. This woman, however, was not dark skinned. As it happens, I did come upon a slave-woman in Ponta Garca named Preta, about 1800 or so, baptizing a child with father unknown. Her owner was listed- just as you said- to a Captain whose name at present escapes me. It is likely the Preta woman my wife knew was descended from this

18. [AZORES-L] Portuguese Race [1]
Yes, I agree that Portuguese is an ethnicity and not a race, but until recently, in many places Portuguese was considered a seperate race. I live in Bermuda where until recently people were classified as "black, white & portuguese". I was interested to read in Leo Pap's book The Portuguese Americans that Bermuda was one of the few places in the world where Portuguese was considered a seperate race. However, I think he is wrong because I think in other places this was also true. I've been doing some re

22. [AZORES-L] Melting Pot [1]
Whatever happened to the Great Melting Pot? Whatever happened to WANTING to be JUST AMERICAN? I'll wager that our ancestors, who fought so hard in the late 1800s to get here to become "American," would positively spin in their graves with all these tendencies to try to become hyphenated Americans. As for getting scholarships, etc., how about good old fashioned merit? One serious problem that Affirmative Action has brought about is that people classified as "minority" who get top jobs or get into go
