Doug,
Thanks for your input. I had heard that there were Fraga's on Flores
and Corvo but; without knowing the church let alone which island to
start looking on I figured the task would be impossible. I know that
Corvo is quite small and I believe, has only one parish so that is
great. What about Flores? How many parishes does it have? I only
recently found from my great grandparents marriage document the first
names of their parents. I guess I could start on Corvo looking for them

Dear Listmembers,
I was wondering if any of the readers know what, if any connection, Pedro
Alvares Cabral has to Goncalo Velho Cabral?
Pedro b: 1468 was the son of Fernao Cabral and Isabel Gouveia.
Goncalo b: abt 1400 was the son of Fernao Velho and Maria Alvares Cabral.
Both had connections to Belmonte Portugal. Both were navigators, from a
landlocked town. Interesting. I read that Pedro was born in the Castle in
Belmonte.
Goncalo's grandfather was, Alvaro Gil Cabral, the Alcaide-Mor de Belmonte.

Hi,
I seem to remember this from childhood. The diminutive 'Maninha' seems to
be a shorter version of the diminutive 'ermazinha' -- 'erma' (maybe
misspelled?) meaning sister, plus the diminutive ending 'zinha.' I also seem
to remember hearing 'mana' (or something like that) as a diminutive for
sister.
Can anyone tell me if my memory correct?

So instead I send it to this list which has 300 folks who get to see this

Today I found a new site with great descriptions of Faial, its villages,
views and a bit of history. An extract of three paragraphs of verbiage is
repeated below. The last word of the first paragraph, a location, is
mentioned in my grandfathers baptism record as his place of birth in 1873.
Does anyone know a bit more about this specific locale?
Also, sure to read my note at the end of thge 3d paragraph.

Is there any more to the story? For instance, a name?
Yes, there were British links to the Azores. Many were consuls or merchants.

Hi Again,
Just one other question, I have been fortunate, so far, to find my relatives booking passage on the SS Canopic. However, there are a few that I can not locate, but know they came over.
Was there only ONE vessel that went from Sco Miguel to Boston, or were there other vessels that took the same run? I do know that it only took 6 days.
Anyone?
Thanks again,
I'm always searching,

Hi Ruy,
I think I didn't make myself clear enough on that point you raised.
I have related goals which include the tracing of all people in all
villages who ever lived on Pico and Terceira (this includes all people I
can find who emigrated to Brasil or the U.S. and all their descendants -
the full and complete collection of all people from these two islands - as
far as possible). I might eventually do other parishes, but those goals
will keep me busy for a long time, without adding more to them.
So I di

Can someone please tell me the best way to read the parish records from Graciosa which are on
16 mm films? Our FHC does not have microfilm readers with the extra magnification and I am having a hard time reading the old handwriting on the readers. I did spend some time today reading a film on a lovely new microfilm/fiche copier which made it much easier. However, I had to hand over the machine each time someone wanted to make a copy!
Any suggestions gratefully received!

Francisco:
Thanks mucho for your posting on the title of Dom. Other than seeing this
title with Royals I have not seen it as I have browsed through many Azorean
books on genealogy. Probably there but I paid no attention to it. Also, I
have not been studying genealogies of Counts, Marquesses, Dukes and members
of the Royal House.
Where I do see Dom is in the church registers of Angra and Praia Victoria
from 1583 to about 1642, when the Spanish were in the Azores. I notice in

How to find Baptismal records.
You have the dates and the name of the father. That is more than most
beginners have. But you must know the village your ancestors came from.
This is a must. If you do not know, you will have to search all villages on
film. There are 11 parishes that have been filmed.
Sometimes knowing the surnames can be a clue to the possible village of your
ancestors.
Good luck,
