toronto is a big city with a large portuguese community. some say it's the
largest portuguese community in north america. but when something like this
happens, you come to realize just how small it really is. almost everyone i

the plane or were supposed to be on the plane or were supposed to be on that
plane back from lisbon.
i have a friend who's parents were on the flight. i've made that flight

that Davis does not know where all these Portuguese are comming from, since
Pres Bush has Portuguese roots he might just push for us Huh!

I'm new to the list and am working on Leite, Pimental, and Piedade in
Taunton, MA. There were cousins also in New Bedford and Fall River.
Are there any others on the list working on these names?
Dear Donna,
OK, you have everything you need to bridge the gap and start your search
overseas.
The archives there have this 100 year rule (more or less). Vital Records are
housed at their Civil Registries for about 100 years. Once the records are
more than 100 years old, they send them to the Archives. The Archives keep
all the old records.
Since your James (Jaime) Furtado Leite was born in 1896 and Evangeline
Pimental was born in 1899, the records should be at the Archives. I know in

I really appreciate this current topic. I have been there and done that and
if not for the people on the Portugal list and this list and the websites, I
don't think I would come as far as I have. I neither speak/read/write
Portuguese. Without their guidance, help in letter writing, and help in the
baptism translations, I would still be "up a tree with no way down.".
True, I have a long way to go--you know that "town and parish" thing for my
Machado sisters! But I enjoy trying to do as much as I can by

HERE'S A GUESS ABOUT THE INFORMANT ON A BIRTH CERTIFICATE. SINCE ALMOST ALL
OF THIS INFORMATION IS FROM THE MOTHER, THEY DO NOT NEED TO PUT HER NAME
TWICE ON THE CERTIFICATE.
I DO SEE THIS ON DEATH CERTIFICATES....THAT'S WHEN THEY DO NEED AN
INFORMANT. DOES THIS MAKE ANY SENSE?????

I have been told by several older relatives that they had heard my gggGrandfather was a Danish whaler. I also have a cassette tape of an interview of an older relative that took place in 1987 stating the same thing. My gggGrandmother, Anna Delphina Pereira from Norte Pequeno, Sao Jorge, had at least 9 children out of wedlock (one being my ggGrandfather Joao) and, as you can understand, this is very disheartening. Considering the fact that research is done on the masculine side, I may have hit a wall that
Prezado Luiz Fernando,
Por que os batismos de Viamco sco perdido, that is a real shame. I do see a more remote chance of actually finding your ancestor's origins. Have you studied his netos thoroughly enough to notice if any became a priest or even just applied to become one? As you probably see where I am going with this, obtaining the processo "de genere" for him at some archive in Brasil will surely tell you the names of the parents and avts of the applicant, and most likely the village of origin for th

I do not come from the same panela as all other Portuguese people. If we
isolate the heritage of each island, especially smaller islands, we can take
some pride in the diversity of the Azorean people. We are a very special
breed. We are not Portuguese as we see on the Continent. We have something
better than that. The panela that you mention is indeed cultural, not
genetic, but you are right, the panela does exist. When I was a teenager and
spent so much time in Luso activities, I realized a pri

As many know, the Ponta Delgada archive has been moved to a new facility. It is not yet complete, but it started in May and I think in another week, maybe two, they will finally re-open for business. For those who have ancestors from these two islands, it might have been frustrating to wait for so long to continue your research.
Because my contact who lives near the archive is already planning to go to the archive for many other accumulated requests over this summer, it will be possible to take any other r
