I was watching TV today and there was a show about all the Latino baseball
players. Today is the first game of the Baseball World Series, so there are
lots of things like that.
One person caught my eye because he has the same surname as my cousins in
Angra. I forgot his first name but the surname was ARMAS. He is a player
for the Montreal Expos, I think.
The surname Armas is almost only found on the islands of Flores and Corvo.
I need to continue my research there some day, but I traced my cousin's

Thanks for the info, Chico.
To answer your question, the parents of Sebastico Dutra de Faria Bulcco are:
Gaspar Gongalves Bulcco, supposedly a Flemish nobleman (but if so, why is
he using the name Gongalves?) and his wife Violante d'Utra.
I can't seem to make a good guess on the year of birth for Gaspar Glz
Bulcco because of the wide variation of birth estimates for his 5 known
children. My estimate for the birth of Sebastico Dutra de Faria Bulcco is
1563. Since there are too many unknown dates for other
My first cousin has asked me if I have a description of the Rego family coat
of arms. I have looked and cannot find one. My uncle had a description he
had found, but it was lost when he passed away.
If anyone knows the description of the Rego coat of arms, I would greatly
appreciate receiving it.

I am sure that this has been discussed before, but for anyone beginning
their research, I'll share something I was reminded of looking for a
marriage record for a friend: in many records you will see the place of
birth listed as "the Western Islands of Portugal." These are, of course, the
Azores. In Rhode Island, I have seen this recorded on birth, marriage,
death, and census records. I guess they weren't sure about "Azores." Just a
tidbit of our Azorean history.
A descendant of the "Western Islanders

I also have Simas relatives in Canada but it will be some time before I
get info on them. Also, I won't get to the local Family History Center
until next wednesday. Then, I will try to link with your abt 1850
ancestory.
Luis,
Thanks for the added info. Funny how your 1763 date is so close to my 1785
"last" Alvares of S.Roque date. Until you mentioned Alves taking over in
about 1800, the thought just never occured to me that Alvares had just
about disappeared.
But I also have a correction to make.....while digging through old archives
and attics, I found a priceless painting, about 2 meters wide and 1.5
meters tall, of a man named Diogo Alves who is depicted in the bow of a
small watercraft, standing up straight and tall
Cindy,
I can think of two people on this list with Pimentel ancestors from Fajc
Grande or Fajczinha next door. I'm sure they will contact you now. But in
case they miss this exchange, they are:
1. Richard Pimentel
2. John Vasconcelos
I already checked my records when your first message came through for the
Thomas family there. I had done lots of research for someone named Thomas
from Flores (Fajazinha) and thought maybe it was also your family. But it
wasn't. I
I have recently run into a situation where one has two marriage dates. One civil and the other in the church.
My Tia Maria Adalina was married on September 5, 1925 in the Registo Civil, then on September 15, 1925 married in the church. This is the first time I've seen this.
Does anyone know whether this was a practice of a certain period of time? If so, when? Was it done on all the islands?
Can anyone tell me if your computer program (Family Tree Maker) only has one place for one marriage date,
My latest ALVARES is Maria Jose ALVARES born in Ribeiras, Pico on
December 21, 1813. She was the daughter of Jose Silveira ALVARES (Also
known as: Joze Silveira Alves) and Josepha Brigida Francisco VALIM.
Both of Ribeiras, Pico.
Hopefully this helps instead of adding confusion.

Caro Manuel Simas Simoes,
I am very happy to see all this information about your Simas people. To
help you out, I checked my marriage database for Lajes and I am certain of
one of these three things:
1. There is a mistake in the 2nd given name of your ancestor known as
"Maria Francisca"
OR
2. This couple married after 1875, the last year on LDS microfilm.
OR
3. They married somewhere other than Lajes, Pico.
If #1 is the case, your ancestors married in 1873 when a couple named
Antonio Silveira de Simas an
Hi List
Is anyone having problems accessing Lusaweb. I have not been able to
since Saturday. I would write Mr. Sanchez but I can't get his email
since I can get into Lusaweb.
I am wondering if it is my webtv. I am getting the impression if it is
not Microsoft Webtv will not access. I think this may be a new problem
and if so I need to make some changes.
Any info out there.
Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all the replies about this problem. Strangely there is no one
and obvious answer to this. Here is a summary of the ideas and maybe
someone more familiar with the capabilities of Works can answer.
1. Save the original file as ASCII then open this file into Word. Yes, this
will work, but whatever formatting Arline had will be lost. I would
probably have to spend a lot of time getting the columns all nice looking
again.
2. Open the file from within Word. Yes, that works, but it reads
Hi Dan,
Well, I truly apologize for thinking it was the site I entered. I was
playing around with the web address and ended up clicking on someone else's
site. When that happened and I saw links I stopped. I didn't even look to
see where I was, that was very sloppy of me.
I truly apologize. I too, can not enter Andre's site. Even with playing
with the address. There are NO links, just his homepage.
Sorry,
Judy

Henriques is more common on Flores and maybe a few on Faial. The FLERINDA
name is probably a corruption of FLORINDA and that is just a 2nd given name
of a woman, not a surname.
Maybe the C. in C. Flerinda was also for Carlota. If so, Carlota Florinda
is a very distinctive name and she is probably the one and only person to
ever have used that combination in the Azores. Other choices for the C. are
Candida, Conceigco, Carolina, and I'm about out of them after those.

Hi Everyone:
Some time ago this subject was a topic, however, the only e-mails I can find are "Given Names" and "Diminutive Names".
I have just one question, one that seems to be puzzling me. Rodrigo Ferreira da Silva Mello (my Grandfather) his parents read: Fortunato Ferreira de Mello on, so far, his marriage to Rita, and birth and baptismal on 4 records of his children. However, on my Mother's birth certificate of 10/1/1914 it shows his name to be:
Fortunato Soares de Melo
(Rodrigo is the paterna
Eloise,
Thanks for the information.
The Azores is such a beautiful and romantic place, it's a shame that there
isn't more information for those of us who are language challenged. I would
be interested in something on Flores if you ever come across it. I agree that
reading tedious books is a challenge.

My maternal grandfather originally indicated his name as Manuel Vieira
de Simas, but changed it ot Manuel Vieira Simas and then Manuel Vieira
Semas. He provided records of his birth as being on November 1, 1858 in
Pico. In his church marriage record he provided his father's name simply
as Manuel Simas (probably originally Manual de Simas) and mother's name
as Anna Carmo (probably originally Anna du Carmo, where du Carmo was not
a surname). Both were indicated as being from Pico. My problem resides
I think what is written is, "Diocese of Angra." The island of Sao Miguel is
in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Angra.

Hi everyone,
Someone write me a question after seeing me and Cheri discussing the
passport records, so I want to reply to the list:
>Cheri Mello and you were discussing passport records leaving the Azores.
Do you have any info about these
records from Angra (specifically from Graciosa)? Do you know if Angra will
search these records if I send a request?

The passport records for anyone born on Graciosa and departing from Angra,
will be found at the Angra archives. If they departed from Horta, they

Ola Doug,
Interesting discussion on the surname "ALVES/ALVARES". I have found both
spellings in my lines from Pico, also. Doug, I think that your data base
should have a more recent year listed for the use of the ALVARES surname on
Pico. I have a ANTONIO MACHADO ALVARES listed as the father of my gt-gt
grandfather, who was FRANCISCO MACHADO SOARES. The date listed on his
wedding certificate was November 23, 1843 in Lajes do Pico.

I just found my grandmother's naturalization records.
Maria Izabel Alves arrived at Providence, RI aboard the Madonna on August

Anyone know how I go about finding out if there is a list with more
information?
