Dear friends,
I was just thinking...We, americans and brazilians, searching for our
ancestrals in Azores. That's something just between us, for sure. What can
our "cousins" there do for us? The governement I mean! We're so far away...
We just have "saudade". And keep on searching...searching... and
searching...
USA is so huge, Brazil too, but the Islands...oh the Islands, they're not!
Why don't we ask the governement of Azores to put on line the immigrant
passport's data for us?

I have found that name in Feteiras, Relva, and Ponta Delgada. And I also

Why are we all thinking that many sons of noble families were fleeing
"something" in Portugal. The truth is that many of the earlier colonizers
were 2nd or 3rd sons without much of an inheritance in Portugal, and
certainly not from the most noble of noble families. They left Portugal to
''better" themselves, by this I mean, to acquire land and riches. Many went
first to Madeira and then to the Azores and later to India and the East.
Azoreans, too, left for India, and many became quite wealthy there

Good morning,
I am constantly impressed by the vast amount of knowledge and expertise of
the people on this list. I am a novice when it comes to research in the
Azores. I am currently reading everything I can find about the history of
Portugal and the Azores. Does anyone out there have any information on who
and when the first PEREIRA was in the Azores?
Thank you.

Hello Again,
Just in case anyone is knowledgeable about the Island of Pico:
I would love to know the population of the island during that time
period 1850-1900 and if the emigration ships to Massachusettes were very
well documented during that time.

That was a great site of the churches in Rhode Island. I thought, and my
uncle thought, that it was Holy Rosary Church in Providence. Munch to my
surprise, it was the Church of the Rosary. Even goes on to state that it is a
portuguese church, formed in 1886! There is a Holy Cross basketball team from
Holy Cross Church, which would give me the mixup, though the latter is the
Italian Church. Seeing the pictures of both St. Mary's and St. Elizabeth's

Check the Morton - Allen Directory if it was after 1895 or so. That book
lists all the ships coming over. Your public library or FHC probably has a
copy.

Cathy and All,
I was born in New Bedford, and my grandmothers lived in that area----they
were wonderful cooks---Portuguese as well as New England style cooking. I
grew up on both. I have my grandmother's Kale and Watercress soup recipes,
written in her own hand. They are as follows:
Kale Soup:
One beef soup bone, with meat on it
As much water as the amount of soup you want to make
One medium onion, cut up
4 potatoes, peeled and cut
One 14 1/2 oz. can of kidney beans
3 lbs Kale--for a big pot of soup---

The earthquake and great flood in Vila Franca in 1522...
I have read in various books some of my Botelhos who lost their lives in this
flood. It is only in books that one can find this information. Even today I
came across mention one one. I had known about this before, but reading it
today, I have it right at hand.

Hi Lynn,
With a name like Rosa, that middle initial P. might be Pimentel or Pereira.
In either case, the origin of that line is likely from Pico. If they are
from Terceira, as you say, I think Angra is your best bet on where they
were living since often Angra attracted people from Pico and other islands.
