Hi Terry,
They gave the name of the lady who appeared on The View for Meredith Vieira's ancestry segment, but I forget her name. She is involved with some genealogy journal which they quickly showed, again I forget which one, but has no experience researching Portuguese and it showed. All they said was that her ancestors all came from the Azores (while showing some old black & white pictures of islands - too quick for me to be sure where, but I think one was Horta's harbor). I don't think they even mention

Marta Amato found Manoel Caetano da Fonseca's parents. They are GASPAR NUNES

these names ?

I will respect wishes, with one request.
I am proud to be a Portuguese American. Half my heritage from the continent and
the other half from St Michael. I no longer wish to associate with members on
this list that lack the compassion in the time of our grieving. We grieve, but we
will heal. God Bless this glorious, melting pot of a country of MINE.

I also had a perplexing ancestor. Her name was Claudina Maria or Bernardina
Maria. She always appeared with the same spouse, but I could never be sure
it was the same person. At first I thought it was poor reading skills, but
it became clear when I finally found her birth; sure enough on the side
margin it was written that her name was Bernardina at her confirmation. This
also demonstrates the custom of adopting different names at vital events,
and subsequently being known by that name.

There was one individual, Chris Mello, listed on one of the flights from
Boston that hit the Trade Towers. I haven't heard anything about him
but suspect he/she was of Portugese descent.
Would like to find relatives of my fatherJoao Gomes Camacho who was born
in Funchal on March31,1901. He was the son of Francisco Gomes Camacho
and Bela Ferreira Camacho. He had other brothers (Teodoro and Abel) and
sisters (Adelaide, Matilde and Vicenca). Surely these people have left
children and I would love to find my "primos".
I checked the database on PORTUGUESE NAMES AND THEIR MEANINGS and found the following for Valladao:

Here are more leads for those of you researching ancestors who lived in the Fox Point section of Providence, RI during 1920.
Ancestry.com has the images online. In addition to Ward One, Districts 166, 167, & 168 which I mentioned previously, I found these very useful--to a point. Serious inaccuracies in some data spoil it a bit. Clearly the census taker could not understand Portuguese, the people talking could not speak English, and the census taker guessed a lot. In my family's case, mostly wrong.
