2. Re: [BANAT-L] [BANAT-L} Question on WWI draft and reasons for Banatimmigrating [1]
Kat -- What were your grandparents names ... and when did they actually come. That might help in gathering information. I do have a suggestion for you. I see that you posted in one e-mail to the Banat list and the DVHH list. Even though those on the DVHH list will see your posting, please post separately. It will be much easier for the maintenance of both lists .... when posting strings set up. Hope that isn't too much of an inconvenience. You could just copy and paste your entire e-mail body
3. Re: [BANAT-L] Familienbuch conflict [1]
Robert, I've had issues like that arise and have emailed Ewald Spang about them. I used the Google Translate program by going back and forth from the translation to what I was trying to say, until I got it to where I thought it would make sense to him (if that makes sense). Mr. Spang was responsive and receptive to the error and was able to tell me where the error was made and what the correct information was. I'd give it a try if I were you. 5. [BANAT-L] Easter food [1]
Just wondering if there were any recipes for traditional Easter foods that our ancestors made. For those of you who thought about buying the 'Die Lieblinger Kuche' It has fabulous recipes in it. Every week we try a few of the recipes and so far have liked everything. I am still looking for goulash and bread recipes for this fall if you would like to share. Rosina, your fish goulash was delicious. Leah

7. [BANAT-L] Sartscha and SILLER people [1]
Dear List, Thanks to the CD I was able to purchase on Setschan, I have found my husband's grandmother and grandfather's information on their parents and marriage. His gf was Peter SILLER, b. 2/09/1876 in Sartscha to Anton SILLER and Katharina SCHREINER. There was an Anton SILLER b. 1838 and an Anton SILLER b. 1836, both born in Ostern. If someone has the Ostern Book (out of print), could they look to see if there is any information on these persons descendants? Perhaps this would give me a clue as to

9. Re: [BANAT-L] Franz Barbie [1]
Reinhold -- I realize that most of the time you need to go backwards from where you are i.e. 1866 - find the parents, and backward. But since I was looking at my Wilhelm & Kalbrunner CD for someone else I looked for the name Barbie. I found a few ... one stood out -- Peter Barbie from Deutsch Lothringen 4 persons in his party - June 1784 Occupation: Bauer and Leinweber -- could that be rope maker -- weber translates as weaver from Rollinger or Rollingen I know this is a huge jump backward .... and I wi
10. Re: [BANAT-L] research in Rumania [1]
Michael, I think there is no hotel in Steierdorf-Anina, If you stay in a hotel in Oravita you should use the railway to Anina, an interesting trip! Preparing your visit you should have a look into two books: Schmidt, Horst Dieter: Familienbuch der Gemeinde Steierdorf-Anina - Ulm : o. V., 2000 Stanglica, Franz: Steierdorf im Banat - Bad Vilbel/Frankfurt a. M. : Arnold, 1982 (Reprint) Both books are in our AKdFF library in the Haus der Donauschwaben in Sindelfingen. Come and see! 11. [BANAT-L] Research Questions... [1]
Dear Kat: I was told by my father that my grandfather left Mramorak prior to 1906 for exactly the same reasons as stated in your second paragraph. My grandfather had at the time a wife and several members of what would become an even larger family. I don't know if any of the reasons in your third paragraph applied except for having more opportunity. Not everyone left in the extended family. I have second cousins who spent time in Rudolfsgnad after World War II was over. Robert J. Bohland; CMfgE 6

14. [BANAT-L] Croatia decreed a law to protect DSs known and unknown graves [1]
Congratulation to the administration of the present day Croatia! Just recently they decreed a law to protect the known and find the unknown graves of Yugoslavia's communist mass murders of the DS, who perished after May 9, 1945. Some 900 unmarked graves are presently registered. Even though the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia was only officially established on January 31, 1946 with Tito as president, and even though the law had no legal standing that Tito decreed on 21st of November 1944 to thr
15. [BANAT-L] research in Rumania [1]
Hello Follow Donauswabians, I am going to Rumania and Hungary in July. I have been researching my family tree for years and it has mostly been a dead end. My maternal side is from Anina Steierdorf in the Banat. My paternal side from Freaudenthal in the Sudentenland. (it is in Bohemia at the moment but I will not go there this trip- my relatives were shot or expelled so not much to find) I was wondering if I go to Steierdorf (another family village is Dognattcka) and look in the cemetery c
16. Re: [BANAT-L] BANAT Digest, Vol 6, Issue 115 [1]
Hi Peggy, You should definitely go. I have been to Serbia and Romania and plan on going again this June. It is so rewarding to see the towns and walk the streets where your ancestors were born and lived. If you are lucky you may find a tombstone. My guide for both trips is Stasa Cvetkovic synergia@gmail.com I highly recommend him. I will be going to Kudritz, Deutsche-Zerne, Hatzfeld, Molidorf, and the surrounding areas. I will be happy to share photos with you and anyone else when I return. Roy Shiflet

18. [BANAT-L] Travel inquiry [1]
Hello Listers, Does anybody on this list know of Banat type tours? Perhaps ones that are flexible to allow one to break off and visit villages and explore some. I have a small amount of traveling experience, but not enough to feel confident enough to travel to Romania/Serbia alone. I would love to see the house where my grandfather was born. . . the places he used to play. Perhaps find new information while there? My grandfather's paternal side of the family comes from (St. Hubert) Banatsko Veliko

21. Re: [BANAT-L] [BANAT-L} Question on WWI draft and reasons for Banatimmigrating [1]
Kat; More than 90% of the Banaters who came to North America came for economic reasons. If you go to; http://www.genealogy.ro/cont/15.htm you will find that Sorin has laid out the problem in some detail. About 20% of the migrants returned to the Banat with the money they had saved to establish themselves in their native villages. The remaining 80% found a life of better prospects here in North America. Conditions for Donauschwabs in Hungary were no worse then it was for other ethnic minorities and in
22. [BANAT-L] Tito keeps his Medal [1]
In 1974 Tito visited West Germany and was awarded a high medal. Today we consider Tito to be on the equal war criminal footing as Hitler and Stalin, so the DS Word Organization sent a petition for that reward to be revoked. Now German Administration is sorry that the medal was awarded to Tito, but because Tito is dead already and can't defend himself in front of a court, therefore this award cant' be revoked. This scribe is sorry to hear that, See you all in Mt. Angel, Rosina www.hrastovac.net

Hello Mt. Angel Travelers, Yes, yes, first comes Easter and then we can all think on September and Mt. Angel Treffen. Our incomparable Leah Ott, who will give us in her charming home a goulash cooking class (optional, please register) is already planning where the ingredients are coming from: The onions from her uncle's fields, the beef from the local farmer, the paprika from her lush gardens, etc, etc. And best of all, the Saturday's lunch at the meeting will be goulash! Best to make sure you can attend

Reinhold -- I have the Wilhelm & Kalbrunner CD's and found the following: Page 126 Date: 4 June 1770 Dupont, Johann Travelling with three persons Occupation: Bauer aus dem Luxemburischen The W&K is a listing (not everyone) who travelled through Vienna on their way to settling the Banat, etc. It is also one of the source works for the Stader Volumes. Hope this helps. If you would like a scan of the page, I can do that for you. Would send it to your e-mail address only. Just let me know. Susan --
