Hello all,
the discussion ist very interesting. So I know, the orphaned children lived in the family connection, or over the "Waisenvater", if there was not a family. My grandmother was also an orphaned child, she lives in the brother family from her father. I was not able to find a record with rigth dates. The probst give on the confirmation date the uncle as her father!
In Sekisch they had a foundation for this children,(named : " foundation for the poor orphaned children" ) and the money ( amount credi

Hello Susan,
in my german translation book "godfather" means "Pate". This is a person from the family he gives on christening the name.
The "Waisenvater" is not the same. This was a named person from the village, who was interested in to help the orphaned children. He had not a connection with the childrens. The village people spended, or take a gift for this children and he had to do that every child becomes a part.
If the people spend only for one child , he was the person to go to the family, where the c

Many people have asked if the AKdFF has someone in place to take over Stefan
Stader's work. So far as I know there is no one in place, but certainly the
AKdFF is lookings for someone with the necessary experience, resources and
time to devote to the project. Needless to say there are only a handfull of
people who fit these conditions.

Dear List Members,
What a response! After posting my queries to this list, I sent a letter off to Sorin. When I returned to my inbox, I found all of your e-mails. You are an amazing group of people. Special thanks go out to Hilde, Ruxandra, Sarah, Simone, Tina, John and Jim for your advice and encouragement.
I don't subscribe to the Banater Post since I don't speak German. If any subscriber sees a bus trip to the Banat from Ulm on May 31, 2004 advertised, I would appreciate it if you would

There were jokes? I didn't see any jokes, at least not any that showed
ridicule or contempt for anyone, as you infer. Just anecdotes from long ago
about conditions below those to which folks were accustomed. Glad to hear

Hi Susan!
Thank you for your input.
I noticed that family stories have a part in everyones history, don't they? What caught my eye was this comment you made in the second paragraph:
"We knew he went to live with another family. Now that I've read the church records, I've learned that he went to live with his godparents."
My question:
How was this information recorded? Was it recorded at the time the event took place? Or what event occurred that this information was recorded the records? For exampl

The 3rd district covered several states in the late 1930s. See

There's a good chance that the naturalization, if it was completed, was done
in the Federal court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The National
Archives Mid-Atlantic branch in Philadelphia has copies of those
naturalization petitions on microfilm up until, I believe, the early 1930s.

actually a pinch of cream of tartar has a much better stabilizing effect than

Perlas was largely a Serb village. Very few Germans lived there. I would
guess it is about 20 miles to the SW of Setschan.
To check on possible chruch books(KBs) from Perlas go to familysearch.org,
click on catalogue and then type in Hungary, then Banat and then Perlas.
Perhaps just Banat and Perlas will do. Anyway, if there are Perlas KBs
available in Salt Lake on microfilm that should give you a list with film
numbers. I am not hopeful that you will find anything but it is necessary

Rose Marie - The more information we have the better. I personally do not remember the fasting. But I turned 21 after the rules were relaxed. My first response to people not eating meat on Christmas Eve was to think of possible fasting and abstinence. Several people kindly reminded me that fasting was usually reserved for Lent.
Of course, I remember abstaining from meat on all Friday's. It is my husband's Italian family who ate the fish feast on Christmas Eve. I think they ate the fish before M

If anyone other than Ron is interested in the Anton name send me a mess
Alfred Riedinger, through careful diplomacy, has succeeded in photographing much of the Setschan church records and processing is now underway.
