Has anyone ever head of the ship SS Mary Washington ? My Grandfather,
Jacob Remsing, was supposed to have boarded this ship in Trieste, Italy
in October of 1908, and arrived in New York on October 27, 1908. That
is what it states on his Petition for Naturalization.
I have searched all over the Internet for this ship, and have had no
luck. I was hoping for a passenger list or anything.
If anyone has heard of or knows anything of the SS Martha Washington, I
would sure appreciate the help.
Thanks,

I messed up and lost your e-mail address so am sending this to the Banat

I find the best reference for looking up towns, districts, and counties in
pre-World War I Hungary is the 1877 Gazetteer of Hungary which local family
history centers have on microfiche. I don't remember the fiche number but
someone in your local family history center can find it for you. There are
directions in the front of the fiche on how to use it. There is an index

I was recently told that my grandfather Louis Metzger used a Von in front
of his name when living in Hungary. Can anyone tell me why some
families used Von and others didn't? And would it make a difference in
how I research his family? He immigrated from Szarcsa. I have a copy of
his military papers in what is either Hungarian or Romanian and there is
no Von used. Perhaps this is just another family legend.

I have a copy of my great-grandmother's passport in French and Hungarian.
She supposedly left Hamburg in 1909 immigrating to the U.S. along with
her children.
Her destination was Chicago.
I have tried both the ports of New York and Baltimore for that year with
no success. Is their another port of entry I can try?
Also, one fo the stamps on it says Varmegye. Is that a province or town?
Her passport is in both French and Hungarian. Her name Magdolna/Madeleine
Ortinau.
Thanks.
Kathy

Can anyone tell me what ships were possibly being used in the yers 1904
from the Banat and 1895 to 1910 from Bassarabia. I had relatives from both
places come over that spentg very little time in the USA and then came on
to Canada. I don't know if they became a US citizen or not. They probably
weren't there long enough to do that. Thanks. Florence

Spread the good word!! This is the same book I once sold out of

Hardcover 1000 page gazeteer, published in Hungary. Excellent!!
It has location names(in Hungarian and foreign, e.g. Slovak) of greater

If someone would be able to translate this short newpaper clipping I
