2. Re: [BANAT-L] Slavonia Farm Scene [1]
I have several photos similar those those, from my ancestors in Slavonia, one side of my ancestors are just barely inside the Slovenian border from Croatia near Matilka (below Novo Mesto) Homes look just like that, peoples dress may be different but I think it may be costume or dressup type of dress for special occassion. The tower of which you mention, if wasn't there before, could very well be a monument dedication of some kind. Custom was for families to build small-large monument according to fianci
3. Fw: [BANAT-L] Sending foreign money and money orders [1]
Listers, I routinely wire transfer huge sums of money to Belgium, directly to the account of my supplier. These days I send $US, but a few years ago wired currency in the form of Belgian francs, the exchange being made in the international department of my bank. This may be acceptable to whomever you are dealing, however, I would warn you that each transaction now costs $32.50. The advantage here is that it is almost instantaneous except for the time difference, and you have a receipt. It may be more pr

6. [BANAT-L] Neu Arad [1]
I have just located my Uncle's Declaration of Intention ( My Mother's brother , Joseph Zeller), and, contrary to previous information, he was born in Neu Arad, not Sanktnikolaus.,( as his parents, Joseph Zeller and Agnes Finster, were.) and arrived on the" Amerika," not the "Carpathia," as his Father did. Written after the town is " Jemes, Yemes, or Trems"..(.not legible), Hungary., - would that be a "county or Parish ?? I have heard that some people have had success obtaining information from chuch r

BANAT-D Digest V99 #327 Diana (Gasko) Keener. Iv'e been communicating and visiting with Romanians and German Banaters for two years now. Every word in the Briefing is true. Romania needs a wholesale revolution to rid their country of those in power that are stealing the country Blind. The Romanian people need a leader and a backer to get them out of that deep rut that they are presently in. During and right after the revolution in Timisoara the ex-communists ran out of the country with much of th
8. [BANAT-L] Marmann in Fibisch [1]
Jody; The name is possibily Marmann. Marmann is a surname usually associated with the village of Fibisch. I do not know if Marmanns were among the original colonists of Fibisch. I received the following reply to the subject letter from the Romanian Nationale Arhivele. 10. Re: [BANAT-L] Possible trip to Temesvar [1]
Well, my west coast accent, should be mostly Sturgis, Michigan! I spent my first 21 years there. Two LIEHN brothers? I have my g-grandfather Ioan Liehn born in Sercaia in 1831 and his brother Georg who lived next door in house 173 (He/they had twins). They, Ioan and Georg were the sons of Johann Liehn born about 1810 of Sercaia. That's about all I can find since I couldn't move into the church archives as I wanted to. The Vicar did tell my, after I made some fun of the "intermarriage" stuff, that it was co

14. [BANAT-L] Migration to Mansfield Ohio [1]
Lorette; No matter what kind of ship they came on passengers would have to pass through immigration. They have to be in the records somewhere. Is it possible your people came by way of England? If so, they could have come into Canada, Boston or New York. The Canadian crossing records are catalogued under St Albans Vt in the LDS catalogue. Dear Norman, I am not privy to decisions made by the Romanian government or by the internet sites you referenced in your email. But I do know that my grandfather, born in the USA in 1901 to German Banaters who settled in ND in 1889, told me that all correspondence from family left behind in the Banat ceased in the 1930's. He attributed the cessation of communication to the direct and indirect actions of the government--perhaps death from starvation, perhaps relocation under stress or duress. Genealogy r

While I don't know why you have concentrated your search on Slovenia, here's an idea. By using some online gazetteers, there are a number of towns in Northern Italy which could be your ancestor's origin. I didn't find anything in Slovenia that matched a Trebenon phonetically (just a Trebelno - not too close) A better match is Tribano, Italy, which at some point could have been Austria-Hungary, but I don't know if it was part of Yugoslavia ever. It should be remembered that the immigrant probably

23. [BANAT-L] Lekvar source in St. Louis [1]
To all listers interested in food. I found a source of plum and apricot Lekvar in St. Louis. It can be found at Jay International Market on S. Grand. We made the coffee cake found in June Meyer's cookbook using the plum Lekvar and it was "ausgezeichnet"! If you live in the St. Louis area you will find many Hungarian/German items at Jay International including many styles of pepper relish etc. such as Lesco, found in many Hungarian recipes. I don't have the phone number for Jay International but perhaps they
24. [BANAT-L] Information [1]
Is there anyone who wired money to the Romanian Bank recently? Would like to hear from you. I am interested in finding out if you were charged for more fees after you wired the money. My bank told me that it is possible that the banks along the way could have a charge also. It seems like when one bank wires the money to Romania it goes to the Romanian bank. My bank did me the courtesy of Faxing a letter using the Fax no. they had on their letterhead. She said it was the wrong Fax number. She was trying to
25. [BANAT-L] Anyone researching the Rey name from NeuArad and Josefsdorf. [1]
If anyone is reserching the Rey name I have a tiny bit of info on Adam Rey who married Elizabeth Klugg. They were bothi born in Neu Arad but were living in Josefsdorf in 1895 for sure when their fourth child was born. Their first three children died young and then Anna was born and two more children, George and Katrina, after that. They left the area in 1899 or so for America, I believe. _______________________________________ Take care Florence
