Hi:
I've been searching for information through several areas (e.g. Roots Web, GenForum, etc) for information on the following family.
William Barringer m Elizabeth Buffington (d/o Joseph & Chloe Harvey Buffington).
Their grandson, William Asa (b 1856) married Elizabeth Stricklett in 1877. They had several children: Leonidas, Hugh, Alverta, Eugene, and William. Leonidas, Eugene, and William had children. I am looking for any decendants of these boys.
Additionally, I am looking for information on t

The information that you have is incorrect, however it has been stated as fact for so long that it's taken a life of it's own.
The Buffington's were a very prolific family in the Meigs County area. Two brothers, Joseph (married to Chloe Harvey) and William (married 2nd to Sarah Hughes) both had daughters named Eli

I'm from the same family - gdau of Pearl Dell Barringer, dau. of Rev. William Barringer. He also had a younger brother, James, born the same year as their father died - 1853.
I'm willing to share info on our family. E-mail me directly, please.
Hi...I have been spending quite a bit of time researching this Barringer family. The Jacob that you mentioned had a brother Frederich who settled in Wynantskill, NY. Frederich married Anna M Zufeld and had a son David...who then had a son Philip...who then had a son Asaph C. Asaph married Mary A and they had a son Charles who was my ggrandfather...Charles had a daughter Mary in Troy, NY and she was my grandmother. She died in April 1999 at the age of 110! If you are interested in this 'branch', I would
My great grandmother's name was Anna Barringer. She lived in at the time called Carmen, NY which is now called Schenectady or town of Rotterdam. She married a man named James Belrose on December 29, 1903. They had seven childeren, Frank, James Jr., Bill, Agnes, Hattie, George, and Myrtle Belrose. Anna's father, I believe Jacob Barringer was a carpenter and so was James Belrose. They built majority of the houses on E. Campbell Road in Schenectady. If anyone has any information on how my great grandmother t

Hi Helen
Here is what I have on William & Elizabeth Barringer. It is not much. I have some of his ancestors...this may not be correct, I got it from someone else and have not been able to verify everything they gave me. Hope this helps. You can email me directly if you want.
Descendants of William Barringer
Thought Id throw in my two cents about the spelling of the name Barringer.
You can get onto the German white pages online and search for names. When I
typed in Barringer, I discovered about a dozen people in all of Germany
spell their name that way. About a dozen more countrywide spell it Baringer.
But when I typed in Beringer or Behringer, I got thousands of hits.
The story I always heard was that the original immigrants to Pennsylvania
spelled it with an e, but to try and anglicize it and appear less
This is a long shot but all I know about my Barringer family:
Polly Rowland (Rowlen) b. 1816 Erie County NY d. 8 Sept 1897 Chisago County,
MN
Jacob Barringer d. ca 1840 Cattarugus County, New York
daughter:
1. Emmaline Harriet Barringer
b. 5 Feb 1833 Cattargus County, NY
2. Unnamed female but married M.B. Grey
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Cathy
Hi Ron,
I copied the list, something I don't normally do, but I wanted to make sure
that I contacted you. Since most people that subscribe to this list seem to
believe that all BARRINGER folks were in North Carolina after coming to
America, it was a great pleasure to find someone who suspected otherwise.
First and foremost, let me stress that the spelling of the name has been
both BARRINGER and BARINGER for, not only the same person, but siblings,
etc.. Never make the mistake that they are two
Is there any connection between the
Barringer and the Baringer family which
was originally spelled Bohringer.
There are several names which are in
both families. George, William,
Caroline.
The Bohringers\Baringers immigrated from
Oelbron, Germany in 1817. They had set
sail from Amsterdam for Philadelphia but
the boat was blown off course and
somehow they ended up in New Orleans
several months later. I'm sure that is
an interesting story but the information
is very sketchy.
>From there, they traveled up
I did some research at Hagerstown, MD and have found that the Barringers of
Maryland used both Bearinger and Berringer. My g,g,grandfather George used
Bearinger while in the Maryland Militia for the War of 1812, Bearinger for
an 1850 Census in Fayette Co., Pa; but, he and his whole family then became
Barringer. So sons, George, John, and William all served in the Civil War
all using Barringer. I have yet to learn anything about son Joseph who was
born in 1836, most likely in Houston Run, Washington Co.,
Today, I finally received long awaited Civil War Pension records of one
George Barringer of Monongahela, Pa. I had suspected that he was an older
brother of my g,grandfather William Barringer; but, since this George did
not show up on the 1850 Fayette Co., PA Census with his parents and
siblings, I was not sure.
Well, I paid my $37.00 for the total file and it was money well spent.
George Barringer married Margaret Jane (Loughman) Rose on April 16, 1852.
She had been married to a Benjamin Rose from 1849 un
I think that my great grandfather, John Barrenger, was the son of George Barringer and Mary Matthews of Surrey Eng. He was born 1813. There were two other brothers, George and Robert. John (then called Ballinger) was transported to Tasmania in 1841 and spent the rest of his life there. I wonder if there are any Barringers on this list who are connected?
Nancy. Bundaberg Queensland Australia
Most of the Barringers that I have researched had their beginnings with a suname
spelling of Behringer, and they mostly were out of the Schweigern area of
Wuerttemburg, Germany.

Ron:
Certainly looking for a connection between the Barringer and the Baringer
family which was originally spelled Bohringer sounds like a theory that has
potential. My husband's family had his ancestor planning to go to
Philadelphia/New York vicinity but got on the wrong boat and ended up in New
Orleans. In his case, he went to Belleville, IL. However, it may be a hard
thing to prove but stranger things have happened. One thing I've learned in
doing this searching is never give up!
