1. [BELARUS-L] hi, new member [1]
hi, I am a new member and a little confused. I was told that barbarevech, barbarowicz, and barbarewicz are polish. Now I find that they are of byelorussian or ruthenian in origin! Please forgive me but who were the byelorussians and the ruthenians? I am researching my greatgreatgrandparents that came to america in 1884. They settled in luzerne pa and lived there their whole lives. I have hit a brick wall as to getting info on the family before they came to america. In the 1930 census my grandmother is lis
2. [BELARUS-L] FARBER - USA [1]
I'm interested in locating Bert Farber and Elaine Farber - siblings - or their children. Bert and Elaine's parents were Lillian and Al Farber. Al's parents were Rose and Sam Farber who got married around 1900 and lived in Newark, NJ. During the 1930s - 40s they had a candy store in the Jersey City, NJ area. Rose's brothers owned liquor stores in Newark, NJ from around 1900 - 1915, and movie theaters in NYC from about 1920. They also owned liquor stores in NYC after prohibition thru the war years.
3. Re: [BELARUS-L] Lost records ? [1]
I don't know if the records for Gomel before 1917 are lost, but I wouldn't conclude that from the page you linked to. Neither my grandfather's village nor the nearest large city is listed on that page, and I have obtained information dating back to the beginning of the 19th century from the metrics (annual census) of my grandfather's village, with more data anticipated. ---------- Original Message ---------------------------------- From: "Eric CHTOURBINE" After reading the page : htt

Would you kindly explain what "Metric Office" website you are talking about? Did you find family information on it? Would you give the address for me; can't find it in preceding list entries on this topic. Thanks, Jo Davis scenmkr106@aol.com

Sounds very interesting! Thanks, Barbara
6. Re: [BELARUS-L] Lost records ? [1]
The metrics records are not on the internet as far as I know. I originally sought living relatives of my grandfather in the Vilejka region, and succeeded in that quest after finding the website of a Minsk-based man who has a business doing archival research. He actually specializes in archival research, and was surprised by my request for "people, not paper." But he took the assignment and found them within a couple of weeks. Last year, I used his services again, and found my grandmother's relatives in th
7. [BELARUS-L] Lost records ? [1]
Hi, After reading the page : http://archives.gov.by/EArh/Erx_spisok.htm I draw the conclusion that the records for the peasants and city-dwellers of GOMEL prior 1917 are lost, for no archivs mention them. Am I correct ?
8. Re: [BELARUS-L] Lost records ? [1]
Hi, Barbara and list-members, I'm researching in my grandfather's birthplace, a village called Barovtsy (Borowczy), which is in Vilejskij-rayon (Vilejka region). My access to metrics records has been a combination of serendipity and sheer dumb luck. My original search was for living relatives in that area (rather than records), and I found them with the aid of a professional researcher based in Minsk whose website I stumbled over back in 1999. I made my first trip to Belarus in 2000 and am now planning my

Hello Barbara, If the register/document that you need is extant and it is not in the Belarus archives then the ZAGS would have it: http://travel.state.gov/reciprocity/Country%20Folder/B/Belarus.htm ________ Lavrentiy Krupniak Bjproko@aol.com wrote: > > Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and this valuable resource! > > < sheer dumb luck.>> > > Those have been the sources of some of my biggest breakthroughs too! >

Try 1897 Census of Jews of Lithuania, a series of 10 Microfiche, available thru the Mormon Family History Libraries. If your local FH Library doesn't have a copy, they can order it from Salt Lake at a very nominal cost. The series ID # is 6001828. Len
13. [BELARUS] Search for place named "Conde" / Mogilev district/ Senno [1]
Hello, I am looking for a place named "Manor Conde" (in German = "Gut Conde") in the former MOGILEV district, subdistrict of SENNO. Timeframe: 1914. This place is the birthplace of a BARON VON HOYER-BOOT. I have already studied a lot of russian maps from this time and also some Austrian and Polish military maps but until now I have been unsuccessfull to locate this place. Furthermore I have a second place called "BUTORI" which is named as the place of baptism. I suppose this place must be near the birt

The Churgins on my side were tailors, and at one point owned a farm in Newton New Jersey. I have pictures, and if you do too, maybe we can spot a family resemblance. >From your cousin(?)
