1. Re: Nicholas (Neikilaus) Thomas [1]
I have THOMAS ancestors from the Hachy/Sampont area in the Luxembourg province of Belgium. May be a clue. Although, I agree with Georges that Thomas appears to be a common name throughout much of Belgium. I also wanted to endorse Georges' suggestion that you check out people who settled near your ancestor. This was the manner in which I found my most elusive ancestor. Good luck with your research. 6. GROBOMONT-SAINT MEDARD [1]
Hi rev. Todd; 10days ago I was so glad I found an answer to your search, I thought When I was looking up Herbeumont I had used the belgian Phone guide on CD Now while I was looking up Malaise for an other rooter, and couldn't find it on the Phone guide, I used the CD of AutoRoute Express, Europe98 by Microsoft, and as I found a match for malaise,, I also saw a village called GRIBOMONT and on 1km of GRIBOMONT is a very small place called SAINT-MEDARD These villages are located in the province LUXEMBOURG
7. Brussels and Gent [1]
Iam looking for Jacques Antoine Bain/Baines that was born about 1786 in Belguim, he enlisted for War of 1812/Napoleon War in 1809 in the de Meuron regiment and remained in Canada after the war in 1816. He married in 1822 to Justine Marchand and came to Wisconsin, USA about 1830. In the military papers it said he was born in Gent, Flanders but we are in the process of cleaning out the house and ran across a old picture of Brussels which I thought was interesting since I had just found out that Bain was

12. Naturalization [1]
On an official birth document we found an indication that one of our ggrandfathers had a "Certificate of Naturalization dated May 12, 1910". We also know that in August of 1908 the man lived in Sioux City, IA, and that he was born in 1880 in Berlin, Germany. I have seen some messages on how to search for the original "certificate" and how to get a copy. Unfortunately I did not make copies at the time. Can anyone get me in the right direction? Thanks for the assist. Happy hunting. Paul F. Van Mech

15. Re: 1900 Census Cumberland Co. [1]
Georges, I've sent the copies to Regine. I'm sure after she transcribes them she will make them available to all. Although Cumberland Co. had many glass works there were not very many Belgians living in the area. Dan Bruynell-BRUYNEEL-VAN STEENKISTE
16. Civil Registration [1]
Today I was at my local FHC to look at the Birth Tables Civil Registration of births in Liege for 1851-1860. I found; NOMS ET PRENOMS DATES DES ACTES Collette Alfred Jean 316 1853 I think this is my grandfather. I don't know what the 316 is. Other numbers for other people in the same column were like 30, 2069, definitely not dates. Does anyone know what the 316 is? Is this an index, if so what does the 316 refer to? How can I find out the information about Alfred Jean Colle

18. re; Belgium travel [1]
Hi Generous Georges and fellow rooters, Etienne was right, travel to Europe is expensive. But...whenever I've gone, I've gone on consolidator tickets not full-price air fare. The price is usually more than half less than regular airfare. Or check the net for prices. I've never found a travel agent booking price reasonable yet. No offense to those in that business. There are also hostels that can be cheaper to stay at, but I've been fortunate to always stay with friends. You can get a good sandwich at
19. RE: the Venesoen Reports [1]
Hi, the Venesoen- records cover several years. I believe it to be from 1893 -1916 but nobody seems to have the exact answer. Some years -records (or should I state boxes) don't exist anymore. The departures of 1901 and 1902 are registered in "EMIGRANTEN NAAR AMERIKA" The years 1903,1904,1906 have been put in registers too. (The local library has bought them too I heard yesterday) other records, such as these of 1908-1916. As you say, the Venesoen -records aren't very well known yet. Their reputation bega

Dear Jose, I ,too, would like to thank you for helping find the women's family. As Lisa states, we all have seen how wonderful and helpful those associated with this list have been. I myself have been fortunate enough to have had the help of list members - Annie and Luc have been a godsend for me. I feel fortunate to have become a member of this wonderful list and can only hope to be as helpful to others once I gain more experience. Regards Linda Heynssens Wright
22. Streetnames in BRUSSELS (Belgium) around 1800 [1]
Josi, Send them anyway. And no translation needed. This streetnames exists for that period only in French, because Brussels was a French city between 1795-1814 (as it was a bi-lingual "Dutch" city between 1814 and 1830). So a translation has no sense, because it's not official. And could only confuse more, because some of the actual " official translations" are in fact different names for the same street. Can Georges or I put them in a page on BELGIUM-ROOTS site ? I do have a list with the Dutch version
