Dear Genners !
As to Personal Research :
I go on researching the KAGAN And WALACH
families, who lived In BERDICHEV till
about 1920.
As to GRAVESTONE PHOTOS :
I cannot see the problem of asking a local
photographer (or a local volunteer with a
digital camera) to take systematic photos
of whatever is readable, and send them by e-mail.
I'm sure each of us would gladly consent to share
the expenses of paying the person involved for
the number of hours it takes + his possible expenses
Ramona,
I thought I answered your question. It is impossible for any of the
caretakers to research names in the cemetary. In the first place, the clean
up crew, as far as I know, can not read the headstones written in Hebrew. In
the second place, many of the headstones are illegible, given the wear of
time. Finally, of those that are legible, the cost to send someone who could
read Hebrew from headstone to headstone in such a large cemetary is
prohibitive.

Nothing unfortunately. I did ask if since some of us had made contributions
for the cemetery clean-up would it be possible for the caretaker to research
some names in the cemetery. I didn't receive an answer.

It's a great idea, but practically speaking will not work. In the first
place, although I appreciate every dollar people sent for the clean up, the
vast majority of people on this list did not contribute anything towards the
clean up of the cemetary, so I do not see why they would contribute towards
a photographer. Ofcourse the pictures can only be taken after the clean ,
which is still in progress, is complete.
Secondly, you need to map out the area well . I assume the point of the

How many stones are estimated to be readable in the Berdichev cemetery? Is
it feasible to send a photographer to take pictures of the readable stones?
Thanks
There is no specific sum that is expected. We are looking for 100%
participation though.

Thank you very much. I did find some information.
Here is a site for Baltimore Maryland City Directories {1800's} if someone
is interested.
http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/megafile/msa/speccol/sc2900/sc2908/html/index.html
It goes in many directions.

Hi Zeev !
I jusd send you an example from another place
(Lomza, USA)- to show you how much some
People are willing to take photographs of
Gravestones - as they visit the cemetery anyway,
and are happy to do a Mitzva (wether they are
Paid or they are not).
I'm sure you would easily find someone with
similar approach in Berdichev.
Hopeful you are impressed (please let me know) -
Anita,
Israel.

Discovered a new site:

They offer free translations as long as the information is related to
genealogy.
I know nothing more about them.

Dear List mates,
I have been asked to post the address once more as to where one can send a contribution to participate in the ongoing cemetary clean up. The following are two possible addresses
In the US - Zev Gershon
10 Crossroads Dr. suite 203
Owings Mills, Md 21117
In Israel Igud Yehudei Zhitomer
P.O. Box 6131
Jerusalem
In either event,
Don't know if this will help any of our researchers, but accidentally
came across a site offering search of free city directories. The list is
currently a bit short, but it still may help someone.

Not having heard from anyone in the group for some time, I thought it
would be an opportune time to ask what everyone is working on.
Has anyone made any inroads into researching their Berdichever roots?
Any new data sources discovered? Any new branches to your family tree?
