Read "Thames Valley Papists", thanks. It is terrific stuff and Tony Hadland has done a remarkable job. Problem is that it mostly deals with the high mucky-mucks, as does much of history. But what about the ancestors of most of us, who were servitors and laborers in the employ of the great and near great? My ancestors were recusants, I think, because the Eystons who owned the village of East Hendred were recusants. The Eystons owned the village, so they also in effect owned my ancestors. We Hunts seem to tur
As our correspondent Janet White told me, mine is a more emotional definition of recusant. I provide it for those who want to get the true flavor of my requests for information on recusants. (And high mucky mucks means the swells, the toffs, the ruling classes. Perhaps my vocabulary is out of kilter with that of others. Oh dear.)
From the Elizabethan age until the mid-1800s, Roman Catholics were a persecuted
group in the United Kingdom. (Until 1791 it was actually illegal to be a Roman Catholic in England
Interesting family connection. One of the major -- perhaps THE major -- suspect in the Jack the Ripper murders was lawyer/teacher/looney Montague John DRUITT. He drowned himself in the Thames. The killings stopped. And evidence shows some of the cops at the time suspected him, for various reasons. His cousin, Lionel Druitt, a prosperous and prominent physician, suddenly upped and betook family off to Australia. Years later, a researcher asked Aussie family members about Montague and received a curt "We don'

I note yor WITHERS interest and whilst this is out of the timeframe you
needed I thought that the following might be of use.
There is a record of an Honnah WITHERS marrying a John TWITCHIN in 1672 at
Inkpen which I believe is only 5 or 6 miles from Newbury.

Hello Lynn, So glad to hear from another relative. I was in Layton about
three yrs. ago for the Morgan reunion. I am related to you through the
Forbes line. My great grandparents were Jane Forbes and Richard Nalder. My
grandparents were Fredrick James Nalder and Hannah Elizabeth Morgan. My
father was Francis James Nalder. I shall send my Gedcom if you like and I
defininitely would like yours.
I just remembered that I was also in Layton last year and saw the Forbes

Hello Myrtle,
If the FHS has not (yet) covered the period you are after then the place to
look is the Berkshire Record Office. I have only ever investigated Newbury
Union records in the early 1800s so I'm afraid I don't know what is
available - but it is very possible that a lot remains.

I am new to the lsit and would welcome any help with the following.
Whilst researching the WHIPPE family using the 1881 census I have found a Philip WHIPPE who I believe may be a brother of an ancestor - Christian Frederick WHIPPE (who was in Newbury during 1881 census). Philip appears to have married a lady called Annie DRAYCOTTE NETHERCLIFFE before getting into some sort of trouble. Annie was in Winkfield during the census and was apparently born in Stockcross. The WHIPPE family originally seem to come

Can anyone direct me in finding out who is buried in Westminster Abbey and
the various chapels associated with it? What qualifies someone to be
buried there?
