Hi everyone-
Has anyone looked up the surname Black in Black's "Surnames of Scotland"?
I haven't been able to find a copy locally. I'm especially interested in
finding out if the name is associated with any particular regions.
Thanks for your help!

Hi
I think I have tried to get this information before but with all of the
interest in the Alexander and James Black connections I am going to try again.
My husbands grandfather was born in Hillsborough Co. FL. I know this
because of business history, census, and some personal records. His name
was George W. Black. He was born ca 1860. His father was born in Scotland,
also information from census. This is what I know to be true.
I strongly suspect that George W. Black's father was Alexander Black.

There is a Robert Black listed in Fayette Co., KY in the 1790 census. The
only problem with the KY 1790 census is that it only listed the date that
the census was taken in that household and not how many people there were
like they did in every other state (other than VA which only gave how many

My earliest ancestor is Jonathan Black b.ca. 1768 PA; wife Mary (no maiden)
b.ca. 1775. He died 08 April 1836 in Hempstead County, Arkansas. His known

while others think they are two different families.

First off, let me say I don't have these addresses myself, but here is an
excellent homepage for people who want to request vital records
(birth/death/marriage/divorce) but don't know the address. Also, if you
know the town, but not the county, there is a link for that, just enter the
name of the town and state it's in and it will tell you the county (I tried
it, it REALLY works!). Hopes this helps out.
