6. [BLACK-L] How I got interested in genealogy [1]
Hi Everyone My mother died with I was 2 1/2 yrs old and my father when I was 13 and I always felt the loss of parents. So, when I married and started my own family, I found a little book called,"My Personal History and Family Record" and started making entries in 1954 -- still have that little dog eared book today. After a few years I contacted a great aunt who was raised with my mother, asking her for what she could tell me about my mother and dad. We corresponded over the years, and then about four ye

My Winckelblech's that became Winkleblack's that became Blacks arrived in 1732 in Lancaster Co, PA, moved to Monroe Co, WVA by 1780-1790, then to Bath Co, KY by 1818, to Buchanan Co, MO by 1838, changed their name to Black while in MO. One young adventurous son went to Oregon with fur traders in 1840, found what a great place it was and convinced the most of the rest of the family to take to the Oregon trail in 1853 to Lane Co and Polk Co, OR. 14. [BLACK-L] My Reason for getting started in Genealogy...... [1]
I like many others got started in Gen mainly for wanting to know about the history and the ethnic make up of my family roots. The other big reason for getting started was for a project for my daughters Special Project Search. When it came time to put it together, we did not have as much as the other childern did. She had only been able to go back 4 generations on one side, of my mothers family and unable to go back but 2 on my fathers side. In discovering this, I got angry at myself and decided to do somet

My earliest know Black ancestor is William Black, born Nov. 20, 1768, married Frances Hill Dec 30, 1806 in Williamson Co., TN. Frances's father was Spencer Hill. Their only son (I believe) was Col. Thomas Hill Black, born in 1807 in Tennessee, perhaps Williamson County. He removed to Bedford County and at age 19 was elected lieutenant of the militia. He was subsequently promoted to captain, and then in his 26th year to major, and later to colonel. He married Mary Love Byler abt. 1829 in Bedford Co. TN
17. Re: [BLACK-L] My reason for starting Genealogy [1]
It turns out that my sister, Peggy Nichoson, had posted this some time ago but for those who requested it, here is the story: Peggy, my daughter, Pat(another geneanut) and I visited our grandmother, Elsie Lucetta Black's birthplace of Bucyrus, Crawford County, OH. We found the family plot, which was so beautifully tended that we just knew there was family close. Peggy had the idea of leaving a note, enclosed in a plastic bag to protect it. The note basically introduced us as family and asked the finder
18. Re: [BLACK-L] Mitchell & Word of Week [1]
Jim, I saw your posting on Mitchell & Word of the Week and you mention the family name Black from Delaware. I have recently found a possible 3rd great grandmother Jane L. Black. The only information I have is a marriage date of Feb. 15, 1855 to a Thomas LINDELL of near Glasgow, Delaware found in the Newspaper "Cecil Democrat" 2/24/1855 edition page 4. It is a shot in the dark...but possibly she is in your family file? Geri McGowan Researching: Delaware - DELLIN, DICKINSON, DILL, LINDELL, MCDANIEL, REED

21. [BLACK-L] Polly Black [1]
Hello! I began researching my father's family while taking a course in Ethnicity in college. I found it fascinating but also found too many dead ends. That was about 20 years ago. My grandmother always talked about her family and the reunions the Armstrong clan has in Texas every year. She talked about war hero's, being related to Audie Murphy and I decided for a gift for my Mom to do a family tree for her for Mom's Day and find out what was true and what wasn't. Well, it exploded! It is fascinating
