Good Morning Listers,
This is my first posting to this List - hoping that I might be guided in the
right direction for research on -
Martin Patrick HEALY - he was my maternal grandfather, born in Co.
Kilkenny, Ireland in 1875,
Afternoon from rainy Wiltshire..
A gent by the name of Ken Hallock has recently sent me a complete extract of
returns from the Times and Cape Town press for all shipping (and other
details) from the period 1899 to 1902. This covers some 470+ pages, and includes
masses of information on units and individual officers. I have started to download
this onto my website at http://hometown.aol.co.uk/KevinAsplin/home.html
if anyone is interested.. it is on the 2nd page.

Hi Kevin
I have viewed your page with interest. I have just received my
grandfathers military history record, and wondered if you could suggest
a few avenues of research.?
He joined at 18 years the Manchester Regiment in October 1888,-- in
September 1891- his record says India, where he stayed for 4 years. Then
Home? for 3 years, then South Africa for 2 years.=30 September 1901. 13
years in all.
I don't know how to check where in India he would be, and where in the
Uk for that matter, he was in the 1st
Hello list,
I am hoping someone will be able to help me. I would like to know if George
FORDHAM served in the Boer War. He served with the 1st Battalion Royal
Sussex Regiment. He would has been ranked as a Sergeant or higher and his
regimental number was 1121.
Many thanks

Hi June:
Re your grandfather in the Manchester Regiment, which is
Regimental District No 63 in the British Army lists:
The 1891 list (Jan 1891)
has the 1st Bn (63rd Foot) as Tipperary for Kinsale
1892 as Kinsale Unfortunately a gap in the lists held, next is:
1895 as Preston,
Later:
1899 Gibraltar
1900 South Africa
But is Kinsale in India, where you thought he was??
Yours, John Wilson (New Zealand)

Hi John,
Kinsale as far as I know is in County Cork, Ireland, not sure about the
military status of that period,
He was 'Home' from `/`0/`888 to 17/9/1891
Then in India from September 1891 to Feb. 1896= 4yrs +157 days.
Then 'Home' 17/2/1896 to 22/10/1899
Then South Africa 23/10/1899 to 31/7/1901
'Home' 1/ 8/1899 to 30/ 10/1901
There is just a table of dates, no locations, apart from country.
I wonder if he changed battalions?
Thank you for looking anyw

Hello Barry, since he was born in 1875 it is very possible that he did
indeed serve in India and The Boer War. My grandfather was born in 1870 and
was able to fight in India, Boer War and Great War.
The question would be did he join up in Ireland or England. Do you know
when he left Kilkenny, do you have any idea? If he joined up in Ireland
there were a few Irish regiments he could have joined. Hope this info just
confuses matters for you.
Good Luck

It is with great pleasure that we announce the dawning of a new era in South
African genealogy. After lengthy discussions involving people
interested in promoting South African genealogy, ideas and plans came
together to make it possible for the Genealogical Society of South Africa
(GSSA) to open a virtual branch.
This branch is known as eGSSA.
For many years there have been people who, for various reasons, could not

Is there any way of determining when, and by which ship, a member of the 8th.,Battery,R.F.A. was transferred to South Africa?
The initial transfer of the 8th.,Battery,R.F.A. was made in 1899 on board the S.S.America.I am trying to determine if my great uncle,John Thomas Wardell, was on board this ship or was transferred at a later date.

Hi Noeline:
W J Price from Picton was in the local Waitori Rifles, which was an
advantage when enrolling. The 7th Contingent (which releived the 4th)
was the only one not to take their own horses as there was no space on the
ship, the SS Gulf of Taranto. So they would have to rely on the poor
quality British remounts.
The 7th took part in sweeps against Boer commandos under Smuts and
De Wet, including the action at Bothasburg (Langverwacht Hill) on 23-24
Feb 1902 when De Wet forced the part held by the 7t

Hi Paul,
Saw your post on Trooper Tom Morris - coincidentally just got back home
from Corowa NSW where he is buried. His obit said he had a long and
successful career as a policeman, then became an alderman and Mayor after
his retirement. It also mentions his recommendation for the VC.
Since I last emailed you I found out he was part of two series of cigarette
cards of VC winners - both Ogden and Taddys. I wonder if they cigarette
companies worked from official lists of recommendations or media reports.
